- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Ridgewood City Council, a series of issues were deliberated including, the proposal for a new municipal historian, concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Heracle Park barn, a proposed phase 2 archaeological study at the Shedler property, and various contract awards for community infrastructure. The council also addressed a recent dog attack incident and considered applications for grants to support local services.
The deteriorating condition of the Heracle Park barn dominated the public comment period, with several residents voicing safety and health concerns. Frank Mortimer from the Parks and Recreation Board, alongside resident Tim Graham, urged the council to address the barn’s problems, stressing its status as a safety hazard and an eyesore. Mayor Paul Vagianos and other council members expressed support for demolishing the barn, citing concerns over liability and the building’s condition. A resolution for the barn’s demolition is set to appear on the council’s upcoming agenda.
The council also extensively discussed the potential appointment of a new municipal historian, with the current director of The Boulder Heritage Center being considered for the role. While some residents expressed gratitude for the service of outgoing historians, Peggy and Joe, others questioned the emphasis on the physical residency of the historians, arguing their knowledge and dedication were more significant.
A phase 2 archaeological study at the Shedler property, recommended by Richard Grub and Associates, proved to be another significant topic. The council agreed to consider authorizing the $13,777 study, funded through a capital bond, due to the urgency of the impending winter weather potentially impeding the study if delayed.
The council also deliberated on a series of contract awards and rejections, including landscaping services for Ridgewood water, a disinfectant used in water, and line stop and valve insertion services. Among the contracts discussed, a notable focus was on the delivery of sodihypochlorite, a disinfectant used in water, with a recommended award to PVS mini bulk for $248 per gallon, not to exceed $124,000 for the contract.
In addition, the council considered a rejection of a proposal for solid waste landfill disposal from Waste Management, due to the bid exceeding estimated cost. The council plans to rebid in hopes of achieving better pricing.
The meeting also addressed community matters such as the need for responsible dog ownership following a recent dog attack incident, and Deputy Mayor Pamela R. Perron’s recognition for her role in achieving the Sustainable Jersey certification for the village.
