- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Cranbury Township Committee meeting, topics included the construction of an inclusive playground project, the ongoing debate over outdoor pickleball courts, and a comprehensive cannabis ordinance. The committee also discussed the accomplishments of 2023, a potential merger between the Parks and Recreation departments, and the need for repairs to the Pavilion at Village Park.
The meeting was dominated by the ongoing issue of outdoor pickleball courts. Council member Matthew A. Scott presented the results of a community survey, revealing strong emotions on both sides of the debate. He recommended resurfacing the Village Park tennis courts for both tennis and pickleball, along with sound abatement measures, to address noise concerns and other factors. The potential merger of the Parks and Recreation committees was suggested to streamline the decision-making process.
During the public comment period, a resident expressed concerns about the proposed location of pickleball courts near residential areas. The committee acknowledged these concerns and agreed to conduct further research and consult with the township attorney on potential litigation exposure.
In a development, the committee discussed plans for a new inclusive playground, designed to be accessible and safe for all community members. The project, which has received substantial community support, will be funded by a $300,000 state grant and an additional $100,000 from the 2024 budget. The committee expressed excitement for the progress made and the potential impact this space will have on their community.
The committee also took the time to review the accomplishments of 2023, including road improvements, the Plainsboro Road resurfacing project, and the implementation of consistent signage. Mayor Michael J. Ferrante praised the township employees and volunteers for their hard work and dedication.
Another point of discussion was the hearing on a revised cannabis ordinance. This ordinance aims to provide more detail around the classes and definitions of cannabis, reaffirming the ban on retail recreational cannabis within the town’s borders, while allowing pre-existing cannabis manufacturers to cultivate for the cannabis market. The committee unanimously approved the second reading of the ordinance, emphasizing its minimal impact on residents.
