Woodbridge Township Bids Farewell to Long-Serving Business Administrator Vito
- Meeting Overview:
The Woodbridge Township Council meeting was marked by farewells to Vito, the outgoing Business Administrator who has served the township for over 43 years. The meeting also addressed several ordinances and community events, but the highlight was the celebration of Vito’s contributions and the announcement of his successor, Casey.
Vito’s departure from the role of Business Administrator was the central focus of the meeting, with numerous council members, department heads, and Mayor John E. McCormac expressing deep appreciation for his decades of service. Vito’s career spanned across various major departments, and his accomplishments include rejuvenating the Woodbridge Community Center’s hockey operations and overseeing renovation projects such as the multi-million dollar upgrade of the club in 2008 and the opening of the Avenel Performing Arts Center in 2019.
Mayor McCormac reminisced about his long-standing relationship with Vito, recalling their initial meeting in 1992. He highlighted how their professional relationship evolved into a neighborly bond, leading to many discussions about the township’s future. The Mayor lauded Vito’s qualifications and experience, stating, “It didn’t take us long to realize that Vito should be the business administrator of Woodbridge Township.” Vito’s ability to transform challenges into successes was a recurring theme in the Mayor’s tribute.
He contrasted Woodbridge’s efficiency with the dysfunction he observed in other communities, attributing much of the township’s success to the Mayor’s forward-thinking leadership. Vito also acknowledged the support of his administrative assistant, Nichollet Dunn, affectionately calling her “Radar.”
Council members and department heads echoed these sentiments, each sharing personal anecdotes and professional commendations for Vito’s leadership. They highlighted his role in fostering a positive environment for public service, with one member noting, “You have lent your talent and your time… to make people feel good about what they’re accomplishing.” Captain Murphy, Director Darden, and Director Brew were among those who expressed their immense gratitude.
As part of the transition, Casey was announced as Vito’s successor. Casey, who had been mentored by Vito, expressed his appreciation for the guidance and support received, stating, “You’ve shown me what I need to do.” This seamless transition was emphasized by the Deputy Communications Director, Megan, who praised Vito’s leadership and expressed confidence in Casey’s capabilities.
Beyond the farewell to Vito, the council addressed routine matters such as ordinances and community events. During the meeting, a second reading of an ordinance concerning traffic regulations was approved, which included the deletion of a handicap parking spot on Maple Hill Drive. Eleven first reading ordinances were also introduced, with public hearings scheduled for later dates.
The council announced several community events, including the reopening of Anchors Tiki Bar on April 18 featuring music by Hollow Molly and an Earth celebration event at the Acacia Center promoting tree planting. The Baron Arts Center invited the community to participate in Poets Wednesday starting in May, and an open house at Middlesex College was scheduled to encourage residents to explore its programs.
A notable moment during the meeting was the announcement of a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to benefit the family of a local police officer whose child is battling cancer. The council member urged community support for the event, scheduled for April 18, providing details on ticket purchases and donations for a raffle. Prayers were also requested for another police officer facing health challenges.
Recognition of local achievements was also a theme, with congratulations extended to Atlantic Tire on its 60th anniversary and the mayor for delivering an informative state of the township address. The council emphasized the importance of community participation in events such as the upcoming Independent Club of Colonial event celebrating Black History Month.
