Delanco Council Discusses Budget Tightening, Seawall Project, and Trail Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Delanco Town Council meeting, officials delved into discussions on the upcoming 2026 municipal budget, ongoing infrastructure projects, and community enhancements. The council focused on financial prudence while addressing essential developments such as the seawall project and trail signage to improve safety and visitor experience.
A highlight of the meeting was the introduction of the 2026 municipal budget, scheduled for formal presentation on May 4th. Despite economic pressures and rising costs in various sectors, the council has managed to keep the increase minimal, under four cents. During the discussion, it was noted that the council members expressed satisfaction with the budget’s development, acknowledging the diligent work that went into its preparation.
Another topic was the seawall project on Ash Street. The preliminary plan involves raising the seawall, addressing the existing wooden bulkhead, and considering soil remediation. With the design phase complete, the project awaits Department of Environmental Protection approvals. Discussions included whether to opt for a concrete cap or an aluminum capping for the seawall, with a preference for materials that allow future design flexibility. An issue raised was the absence of an end cap at one location, Oakford, which emphasized the need for comprehensive project planning to ensure all components are accounted for.
In the realm of community enhancements, the installation of trail signage took center stage. The council expressed satisfaction with the design of a new sign aimed at informing visitors about local trails, including distances and connecting routes. The sign, measuring 24 by 36 inches, will be installed near a gated area to ensure high visibility. This project is funded through open space funds. The council also discussed the logistical aspects of installation, with public works tasked with the responsibility. The initiative is intended to enhance safety and visitor experience, especially for hikers, as one council member emphasized the importance of clear trail markings for safety.
The meeting also covered the Union Avenue boat ramp project, with approvals from the Army Corps pending further DEP clearances. The Centennial Park and Vine Street Park improvements were addressed, with landscaping scheduled to begin in the fall. The council anticipates receiving detailed estimates for the landscaping project within two weeks, with preparatory tasks expected to commence in June.
A comprehensive review of public works activities was presented, highlighting ongoing efforts such as patch asphalt application and brush debris management. The department faced challenges due to a malfunctioning chipper, leading to the use of additional dumpsters for brush overflow. With the chipper repaired, operations returned to normal, including the maintenance of parks and preparation of ball fields for the upcoming season.
The council broached the subject of a proposed ordinance amendment to address solid waste and mandatory recycling collection, specifically regarding tire disposal fees. The current fee structure was deemed outdated, with suggestions to align township fees with those charged by the county. This alignment aims to cover actual disposal costs, particularly during cleanup events where numerous tires are collected. There was a consensus on using the county’s fee structure as a guideline, and a draft ordinance was prepared for review. A public hearing for the ordinance, numbered 2606, is scheduled for April 20, following unanimous approval from the council members present.
