Clark School Board Recognizes Educators and Addresses Veteran Involvement
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Clark School Board meeting was marked by the recognition of outstanding educators, discussions on enhancing veteran involvement in schools, and financial updates. The board honored several educators for their dedication and achievements, acknowledged the Science Olympiad team’s success, and discussed veterans’ roles in educational experiences.
At the forefront of the meeting was the acknowledgment of notable educators who have made contributions to the Clark School District. Superintendent Edward Grande lauded the recipients of the New Jersey Department of Education’s Teacher of the Year and Educational Support Professional awards. Among those honored was Mr. Freddy Reyes from Arthur L. Johnson High School, who was celebrated as the Educator of the Year. With 27 years in the social studies department, Mr. Reyes was recognized for his innovative teaching, especially his development of a Holocaust and genocide course, which led to several grants and educational field trips. His efforts extend beyond the classroom as he mentors future educators through a course designed for aspiring teachers.
Joe Rodriguez, the Governor’s Educator of the Year from Carl Hump Middle School, was also recognized for his over 20 years of dedication as a science teacher. Beyond his classroom duties, he serves on the negotiations team and as a PTA liaison. At Frankie Henley School, Cindy Terrell was honored as Teacher of the Year for her pioneering methods in STEM education. Denise Laari, the Educational Support Professional of the Year, was acknowledged for fostering a supportive learning environment. Valley Road School’s Carrie Kennedy was celebrated for her impact as an art teacher, notably through her independently managed annual art show, which highlights her students’ creativity.
In addition to educator recognition, the board addressed the importance of veterans’ involvement in the school district. Representatives from the American Legion and other veterans’ groups expressed a strong desire for increased recognition of veterans, especially around Veterans Day. Dave Broadwell, an American Legion member, emphasized the value of students engaging with veterans to learn firsthand about their experiences and sacrifices. He advocated for integrating veterans into educational activities to foster understanding and appreciation among students.
Veteran participation in school ceremonies was discussed, with concerns about declining student involvement in Veterans Day events. Broadwell highlighted the benefits of such participation, which extends beyond traditional celebrations to encompass personal growth and civic engagement. The board expressed willingness to collaborate with veterans’ groups to enhance these educational experiences, acknowledging the historical significance of Clark’s namesake, Abraham Clark, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The meeting also featured updates on financial matters, including the approval of a donation from the ALJ Booster Club for a new sound system at the sports complex. A financial report clarified a previous discrepancy in the district’s debt service calculations, confirming there would be no tax increase due to a recently supported referendum for school upgrades.
Public comments included concerns about residential pilot agreements that exempt developers from contributing to the school budget while increasing student enrollment. The board was urged to address this issue to ensure financial stability without raising taxes. Additionally, there were discussions on legal rulings related to transgender education and the need for transparency in school curricula, allowing parents to opt out of specific teachings if desired.
