Passaic County Health Initiatives Highlighted Amid Funding Concerns and New Service Center Launch
- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Passaic County Board of Commissioners delved into critical public health initiatives, with discussions focusing on the county’s communicable disease management and the anticipated launch of the new Highlands Regional Service Center. Key issues included the distribution of COVID-19 test kits, mosquito control efforts, and potential financial implications due to reductions in federal public health grants.
The county’s health officer presented an exhaustive report on the communicable disease management efforts, highlighting the 18,820 individual cases recorded across Passaic County. In response to these cases, 2,419 were directly addressed by the health department. The report also underscored the distribution of 21,960 COVID-19 test kits in 2025.
A significant portion of the discussion concentrated on mosquito control measures, an area of concern due to the health risks posed by mosquito-borne diseases. The health officer detailed that over 14,000 inspections had been conducted in 2025, with 257 pools tested and 21 found positive for mosquito populations.
The meeting also addressed the upcoming opening of the Highlands Regional Service Center on Edgar Drive in West Milford. This new facility is set to house both the health department and senior services. This initiative reflects the county’s strategic efforts to decentralize services and increase accessibility for its residents.
Financial concerns were a recurring theme, particularly regarding the impact of recent reductions in federal public health grants. There was acknowledgment of the challenges faced in securing funding during 2025, with ongoing efforts to collaborate with county administrators to maintain a balanced budget and continue delivering services effectively. Questions were raised about the financial implications of shared services agreements with municipalities. These agreements are estimated to have provided substantial savings, with one commissioner suggesting that municipalities like Bloomingdale could save approximately one and a half million dollars over a decade.
The health education promotion and wellness division reported the successful completion of 173 programs in 2025, reaching over 2,281 participants. These programs covered various health topics, including chronic disease management, lead prevention, and injury control. Notable events such as the men’s and women’s health extravaganzas were mentioned, with over 150 individuals screened for significant health issues like breast and prostate cancer. Future events were scheduled for May 2nd and June 6th, 2026, with promotional materials in development to ensure community engagement.
Attention was also given to the Weights and Measures division, which plays a role in consumer protection. This division conducted 11,867 device inspections in 2025, resulting in 604 violations related to pricing and packaging.
Further, the meeting highlighted the success of a recent “homeless connect day” where county departments collaborated to provide essential services to approximately 250 unhoused individuals and those at risk of homelessness.
In terms of procedural elements, the meeting saw the addition of late starter resolutions to the consent agenda, specifically resolutions authorizing participation in the LEAP implementation grant program. These motions were successfully carried, along with the approval of the consent agenda, personnel agenda, and bills, culminating in a motion to adjourn.
