Oradell School Board Celebrates Student Innovation with ‘Toilet Titans’ and Odyssey of the Mind Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Oradell School Board meeting celebrated student innovation and creativity, highlighting the achievements of the “Toilet Titans,” a student team advancing to the finals of the STEAM Tank competition, and the success of the school’s Odyssey of the Mind teams. The meeting also covered administrative updates, including the approval of the school budget and discussions on district safety procedures.
The meeting’s central topic was the presentation by the “Toilet Titans,” a team of students who qualified for the STEAM Tank finals with their invention of a “one-way antibacterial toilet flap.” This innovative project addresses the issue of bacteria regurgitation from toilets, a concern particularly relevant in public and school restrooms. The students, Owen, Jack, Mikey, Maxwell, and Vince, explained their prototype’s mechanics, which involve a flap that closes after flushing to prevent germs from resurfacing. They emphasized the health implications of bathroom hygiene, noting that germs could linger in the air, potentially causing illnesses such as colds, flu, and bacterial infections.
The board members showed great interest and enthusiasm for the project, engaging the students with questions about the prototype’s progress and potential market. The students admitted they were still in the research phase, primarily using cardboard for their prototype but considering 3D printing. They shared their motivation behind the project, which stemmed from a shared interest in health safety issues. The presentation concluded with admiration from the board for the team’s achievement, competing against older students and securing a position in the top 20 out of over 600 teams. The next phase of their competition will be evaluated via Zoom, with a chance to present in Atlantic City if they rank in the top three.
The board also recognized the accomplishments of the school’s Odyssey of the Mind teams, particularly the Division Two team that competed at the state finals. Certificates were awarded to participants, and the team members shared their experiences and gratitude for the program that taught them valuable life skills, creativity, and problem-solving. They discussed their performance, which incorporated elements from the story of the Three Little Pigs, and the challenges they faced, such as creating a wearable device under specific constraints. The team’s performance involved collapsible and visually engaging props, humor, and clever wordplay.
The board members and the team’s coach, Michelle, expressed gratitude for the students’ dedication and creativity. Michelle acknowledged the board’s support and Mr. Walsh’s involvement as a judge at the tournaments, emphasizing the positive impact of such programs on students’ development. The presentation of certificates concluded with appreciation from the board chair, who encouraged the students to continue their creative pursuits.
On the administrative side, Mr. Iappelli announced the county’s approval of the school budget, with only one minor change required. This approval allows the board to advertise the budget ahead of the public hearing scheduled for May 6. Additionally, the superintendent reported on district matters, including an anti-bullying assessment score of 72 out of 78, enrollment figures, and upcoming NJSLA adaptive testing. The board was also informed of personnel changes, including the retirement of an ESL teacher and the extension of a Title program to include tutoring.
The meeting addressed district safety, with discussions on evacuation and reunification plans involving input from the Oradell Police Department. The board expressed satisfaction with the progress of safety planning.
