- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Sea Bright Borough Council meeting, two major issues stood out: an emergency declaration due to a washout behind jetties posing a safety hazard, and the discussion of permitting alcohol sales at the local farmers market. The council addressed the need for an emergency declaration to prevent accidents as erosion has created dangerous conditions near the jetties. Moreover, the council deliberated the potential for local breweries and wineries to sell their products at the farmers market.
Councilmember Marc A. Leckstein raised the issue of the hazardous washout, prompting the Council to contact the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for an emergency declaration. This would expedite the necessary repairs to prevent residents from potential harm.
In new business, the council voiced support for a proposal that would allow local breweries and wineries to sell their products at the farmers market. The idea is to encourage economic growth and provide an additional attraction for the market. Councilmember John M. Lamia, Jr. initiated the conversation, emphasizing the practice as commonplace and beneficial in other markets. The council discussed at length the implications of such a move, including how to regulate consumption and ensure the alcohol sold is only for off-premises enjoyment.
Other meeting actions included the unanimous introduction of two ordinances, one amending the borough’s administrative code and another to exceed the municipal budget appropriation limits to establish a cap bank. Additionally, the council approved a large voucher in the amount of $668,674.68.
The meeting also acknowledged the passing of a community member, with a moment of silence to honor their memory. However, due to worsening weather conditions, several agenda items were deferred to the next meeting.
