Cedar Grove Town Council Approves Substantial Infrastructure Upgrades and Budget Plans
- Meeting Overview:
The Cedar Grove Town Council meeting addressed multiple infrastructure projects, approved the municipal budget, and discussed various ordinances and resolutions. Among the topics were the improvements to stormwater systems, water main replacements, and budget allocations aimed at enhancing the township’s infrastructure without incurring additional debt.
One notable items was the resolution authorizing a change order for Thomas and Sunb Builder LLC to install stormwater pipes at the community park’s lower playground. The construction revealed collapsed stormwater pipes, prompting the council to approve a repair plan to avert future damage to the new infrastructure. The change order, reflecting an increase of $16,335, will be funded through extra capital money, as it is not covered by the playground grant. Work is anticipated to proceed promptly.
Another development was the introduction of pending ordinance 26-974, which aims to adjust salaries and fees for township officers and employees for the fiscal year 2026. This ordinance is described as a housekeeping measure to update wage ranges across various employee classifications. It is set for publication on the township’s official website, with a public hearing scheduled for June 2026.
The council also tackled a resolution to augment the 2024 professional service contract with Suburban Consulting Engineer, Inc., for engineering design services related to the bank stabilization of the Pekman River. This effort is part of a broader initiative to secure capital funding for crucial bank stabilization work along the riverbank.
In addition to these measures, the council considered a resolution supporting the Cedar Grove Board of Education’s request for New Jersey Department of Education funding for renovations to the Leonard R. Park School. The proposal includes the construction of a road through Panther Park to enhance traffic circulation and safety.
The meeting also highlighted several infrastructure projects, including the reconstruction and improvement of stormwater piping on Cedar Street and the installation of a new water main on Monroe Street. The Cedar Street project, awarded to Suburban Consulting Engineer, Inc., will not exceed $45,400 and is necessary due to the potential damage to existing clay stormwater pipes during road construction. This project aligns with an NJDOT grant, emphasizing the township’s strategic use of state resources.
On Monroe Street, a $96,825 project will address the frequent water main breaks by installing a new main and upgrading residential water services.
Additionally, the council approved a redevelopment agreement amendment related to 36 Cliffside Drive, aimed at increasing the number of affordable housing units. This move aligns with Cedar Grove’s broader objective of providing low- and moderate-income housing options within the township.
During the public comment portion, a resident expressed concern over a hand-carved eagle statue donated to the township, which might be removed from the library. The resident suggested preserving the statue either at the library or returning it to the original donor’s family. The council agreed to discuss the matter further with the library director.
The meeting concluded with the approval of several routine measures, including the adoption of the 2026 municipal budget and the solid waste collection district budget. Both budgets were characterized as fiscally prudent and passed without public comment or debate. The council also moved to prepare and mail estimated tax bills for the upcoming quarter and approved a raffle application for the Alpine Learning Group Foundation.
