The board president highlighted community concerns over staff members not included in the reappointment list, receiving numerous emails from stakeholders advocating for their retention. The board clarified its inability to intervene in non-renewal decisions. Board Counsel explained that non-tenured employees not recommended for renewal are excluded from the agenda, emphasizing the superintendent’s sole discretion in hiring matters.

During the public comment session, speakers addressed issues, including the district’s financial decisions and leadership in athletics. Frank Sanchez, principal of Columbia High School, defended Athletic Director Jacqueline Winstead, praising her leadership, particularly during challenging times. David Bernstein raised concerns over a contract for behavior therapy services, noting discrepancies in rates compared to a neighboring district. He questioned the district’s financial decisions, pointing out that the South Orange-Maplewood district authorized rates higher than those of Scotch Plains-Fanwood. This prompted discussions about the district’s contracted services and financial prudence.

Steve Reichenstein, an alum and current teacher, emphasized the importance of stability in leadership, praising Winstead for her contributions to the athletic department. He recounted his experiences within the district, noting the turnover in administration and the need for consistent leadership. Reichenstein offered his assistance in improving communication and highlighted the value of retaining effective personnel to avoid the costs and delays associated with onboarding new employees.

The meeting also saw the board address several resolutions, including the reappointment of staff for the 2026-2027 school year. Resolutions 4966 and 4967 related to non-tenured and other staff reappointments passed unanimously without discussion. Resolution 4968, which renewed a contract for a therapeutic mental health wraparound program, was approved following a discussion about its significance during mental health awareness month and its slight cost increase from the previous year.

Additionally, the board approved resolution 4969, involving a separation agreement for a specific employee, with limited discussion before passing through a roll call vote. The meeting concluded with announcements of upcoming sessions, including a public meeting on May 21, 2026, and a board retreat on May 28, 2026. Attendees were also reminded about a final strategic planning session on May 11, encouraging community participation.
