A highlight of the meeting was the recognition of partnerships that have made substantial contributions to the extended learning programs. Dr. Beta expressed pride in the growth of these initiatives, which now reach approximately 55% of the district’s student population. The program has expanded over the past five years, with 455 teachers hired to facilitate these programs, supporting 2,980 students. The success of these initiatives was attributed to the strong collaborations with community partners and dedicated supervisors.

Among the partners recognized was Four Kids Only (FKO), which has grown from serving 40 children to 200 students across various programs, including summer school and vacation camps. The collaboration between Chelsea Public Schools and FKO has resulted in securing $2 million in 21st-century grants, making these programs free for families. Briana Flannery, executive director of FKO, and Patrick Sheay, district director for Chelsea, were present to receive acknowledgment for their contributions. The relationship between the district and FKO was described as familial.

Another partnership celebrated was with Soccer Without Borders. This collaboration has filled a gap for middle and elementary school students interested in soccer, supporting 41 middle school girls and developing pathways for girls’ sports. The program has expanded to include 80 high school boys and 85 elementary school students, reflecting its impressive growth since its inception. An exciting development was announced, as 30 Chelsea students will participate as mascots in the upcoming World Cup.

The Museum of Science was also recognized for its partnership, which began five years ago and has impacted the district. Every K-8 student now utilizes the museum’s engineering kits, and the collaboration includes professional development for teachers, busing, and free field trips for Chelsea families. A notable event was an eclipse party organized with the museum, which attracted over 4,000 attendees, further highlighting the partnership’s success.

Beyond celebrating partnerships, the committee addressed new business by approving several grants. These included a $15,014 preschool initiative grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, private grants totaling $18,000 for the next school year, and a $834.74 SNAP outreach plan grant from the University of Massachusetts. A $500 grant from the Chelsea SA Club for the Girls on the Run program was also accepted. Although the outcome of a $300 grant from the Chelsea Santa Club remained unclear, the atmosphere was cooperative, with all proposed actions receiving affirmative votes.

In addition to grants, the committee approved several out-of-state field trips. Notable trips include a Model UN experience for Chelsea High School students at the United Nations headquarters in New York City and a marine ecosystem study at Sea Coast Center in Rye, New Hampshire, for Clark Middle School students.

Transparency in district communication was addressed during the public comment period. A member of the public emphasized the need for timely information about the budget and potential cuts, calling for greater transparency and community involvement. Dr. Tamar Blake Hansy presented key indicators of success for the district, sharing data on student attendance and dropout rates, which showed slight improvements from the previous year.

Student representatives provided updates, noting senior commitments to colleges and the positive impact of the Twilight School program, which improves attendance and academic performance for struggling students. They shared the mix of excitement and nostalgia among seniors as they approach graduation.
