In response to projected growth driven by local housing developments, the Warren School Board is considering substantial changes to the district’s school organization model. During the meeting, three potential models were presented to address the unsustainability of maintaining four K-5 schools. The proposed options include transitioning to an intermediate model with three K-3 schools and one 4-5 school, or a parallel banded option of two K-2 schools and two 3-5 schools. These discussions, emphasized as preliminary, will continue at subsequent meetings, with any changes expected no earlier than the 2027-2028 school year. The planning for growth working group highlighted these models after reviewing the projected impacts of housing developments.

Alongside these discussions, the meeting was a celebration of the district’s educators and support staff. Recognition was given to outstanding professionals, with several receiving prestigious Governor’s Educator of the Year Awards. Mrs. Sarah Scala, known for her innovative teaching in theater and dance, was highlighted for her adaptability during the pandemic, which earned her the accolade of Governor’s Educator of the Year. Mrs. Scala was commended for creating a dynamic and safe classroom environment.

Similarly, Miss Erica Bell was recognized as the Educational Services Provider of the Year for her compassionate approach in special education. Her work with neurodiverse learners has cemented her reputation as a “fierce advocate” within the educational community. Mrs. Jessica Moransky, another recipient of the Governor’s Educator of the Year award, was praised for her transformative practices in the kindergarten through second-grade LLD program at Woodland School. Her ability to adapt IEPs and provide engaging, hands-on learning experiences was particularly noted, as was her positive impact on her students’ lives.

The introduction of a new award category, the Unsung Superhero in Education, was announced. Although the recipient was not present, the board expressed intent to make this recognition a staple of their award process, further supporting those who excel in the educational environment without traditional acknowledgment.

In addition to recognizing educators, the meeting celebrated significant donations to the district. Chevron’s $2,500 gift for special education materials at Central School and Mr. Kumar Babanasi’s $5,000 contribution for cafeteria tables at ALT were acknowledged with gratitude.

The meeting also included the appointment of Mrs. Casey Capelli as the new principal of Central School. Dr. Mingle introduced her as a promising addition to the district. This appointment was well-received, with welcoming sentiments echoed by board members and a planned welcome letter to introduce her to staff and parents.

The finance operations and security committee provided updates on reviewing potential security options, particularly concerning the security vestibule. This topic will continue to be explored in future finance committee meetings, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure student safety.
