Westfield School Board Celebrates Outstanding Educators and Addresses Student Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Westfield School Board meeting featured significant events, including the recognition of exceptional educators within the district and addressing pressing student concerns about school nutrition and technology use.
The meeting began with a series of awards recognizing outstanding contributions from educators and staff. Nicole Barka, a third-grade teacher at McKinley Elementary School, received the Charles Philhower Fellowship Award, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield. Barka’s dedication to teaching and her nurturing classroom environment were highlighted, along with her commitment to professional growth. She expressed gratitude for the support from her colleagues and the Rotary Club, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and courage in education.
The Weman Steamraft Award was presented to Francesco Dory, the assistant head custodian at Westfield High School, acknowledging his leadership and support within the district for over five years. The awards segment underscored the dedication of both teaching and non-teaching staff in shaping the educational environment and celebrated their service to the community.
Recognition continued with awards from the Optimist Club. Jessica Mikovitz, an English Language Arts teacher at Edison Intermediate School, and Linda Morrison, a mathematics teacher at Roosevelt Intermediate School, were honored for their exemplary teaching at the intermediate level. Mikovitz and Morrison were both praised for their innovative teaching methods and ability to connect with students.
The Westfield High School Awards of Excellence further celebrated educators, including Mr. James Rowan, who received the Robert and Linda Fouse Memorial Award for his dedication to the Latin program. Mr. Jeffrey Knight was honored with the Jeffrey Family Above and Beyond Award for his supportive environment in the classroom and contributions as a swim coach. Art teacher Miss Leah Jarvis received the PTSO Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award, while Miss Caitlyn Cheddar was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year for her exceptional teaching and focus on character development.
In addition to recognizing staff achievements, the board addressed student concerns raised during the public comment section. Alice Manzo, a senior at Westfield High School, spoke about the need for healthier food options at the school. She stressed the importance of nutrition for athletic performance and academic success, criticizing the high sugar content in snacks available at the school. Manzo highlighted the health risks associated with ultra-processed foods and urged the board to consider healthier alternatives.
Riley Brickman, a junior, proposed installing ad blockers on school-issued Chromebooks to enhance the educational experience. Brickman argued that ad blockers would reduce distractions, improve web page loading times, and protect students from inappropriate content. She noted that recent policy changes limited students’ ability to use personal ad blockers, affecting classroom efficiency. Her plea emphasized the need for technology that supports rather than hinders learning.
The board listened attentively to these student concerns, with the president encouraging students to submit their suggestions for food improvements. The board promised to take the feedback into consideration, showing a willingness to engage with student needs and improve their school experience.
Beyond these discussions, the meeting included several announcements and updates. An anonymous donation of $500 was acknowledged, contributing to music classes at both Edison Intermediate School and Westfield High School. The board reviewed finance items and policy regulations, including updates on student discipline and code of conduct. The curriculum section introduced new curricula for the visual and performing arts, along with a new AP macroeconomics textbook, all of which received unanimous support.
The board also discussed construction plans for Westfield schools. Upcoming events were noted, including the Arts on the Loan event, the district art show, and “coffee with the superintendent” sessions to discuss referendum projects.
In their reports, board committees provided updates on various initiatives, including principal succession planning following retirements and the introduction of full-day kindergarten. The annual superintendent evaluation process was outlined, and recommendations for updated job descriptions were presented for approval.
