Revere Disabilities Commission Approves Full Funding for ADA-Compliant Voting Booths
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Revere Disabilities Commission approved full funding for ten ADA-compliant voting booths. This decision was part of a broader discussion that addressed multiple community concerns, including beach safety, event planning, and infrastructure improvements.
The commission deliberated on whether to pursue partial or full funding, initially considering a reduction in the number of booths due to potential financial constraints. However, after confirming that their budget could accommodate the expense without depleting resources, the decision to proceed with full funding was made.
The chair promptly agreed to document the vote and communicate the commission’s decision via email. This decision aligns with the broader goals of the commission to enhance accessibility throughout Revere, particularly in public spaces and during community events.
Safety concerns along the beach were another major focus. The commission discussed ongoing efforts to address visibility issues at crosswalks, exacerbated by construction and the influx of new apartment complexes. These concerns have been communicated to the Department of Conservation and Recreation, though progress may require extensive studies and policy reviews. The commission emphasized the need for proactive community engagement to highlight safety issues and advocate for necessary improvements, particularly as Revere gears up for events like the kite festival, sand sculpting, and Pride celebrations which are expected to increase pedestrian activity.
Additionally, the commission is seeking to enhance its events with engaging elements such as an emotional support dog from the police department and the involvement of the fire department and EMTs. These efforts aim to create a more inclusive and dynamic environment for attendees, especially during the Disabilities Day at the Beach event.
The commission also addressed a variance request submitted to the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board. This request pertains to a proposed residential building located in a designated AE flood zone, which necessitates specific design accommodations. The commission voted to authorize a member to express its stance on variances, expediting the process and ensuring timely responses to accessibility concerns.
Moreover, the commission discussed Chapter 40, Section 22 HP funds, which are collected from handicap violation fines and can be used for projects benefiting people with disabilities. An inquiry from the Revere Election Department about utilizing these funds for ADA-compliant voting booths prompted the commission’s funding decision. While questions arose about election funds typically covering such expenses, the commission chose to support the request, recognizing the importance of accessibility at polling stations.
The meeting also touched on personal and community matters, including a member’s frustration over delays in wheelchair repairs and the lack of significant resident concerns, apart from a few inquiries about resources for adult children and handicap parking. The commission intends to provide guidance where possible, directing residents to appropriate channels for assistance.
The commission is also keeping an eye on infrastructure improvements, such as an upcoming renovation at a local transit station aimed at enhancing accessibility. This project, scheduled to begin in June, is considered long overdue, and the commission looks forward to its completion.
The chair scheduled the next meeting for June 10th at 6 PM and reminded members of the urgency of finalizing vendor arrangements for upcoming events due to the municipality’s fiscal timeline.
