Greater Lowell Technical High School Secures $2.5 Million Grant for Capital Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
In a development for Greater Lowell Technical High School, a $2.5 million grant from the Healey Driscoll administration will facilitate capital improvements, including shop expansions and modernization, and the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment for the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration program. This grant marks a substantial investment in the school’s infrastructure and educational resources.
The meeting of the Greater Lowell Technical School Committee highlighted the school’s ongoing achievements and future plans. One focus was the recognition of outstanding students. David Roy, the valedictorian, and Alyssa Berseron, the salutatorian, were honored for their exemplary academic records and extensive extracurricular involvement. David, ranked first, has made strides in information technology services and has been active in founding and leading various clubs, such as the Model UN and debate team. His accolades include industry certifications and participation in the Princeton University summer journalism program. David intends to study economics and government at Harvard University, with aspirations in constitutional law and civil service.
Alyssa, ranked second, has excelled in magical laboratory assisting and has contributed to the community through volunteer work at the Lisa Palado Dance Center and the Tingsboro Public Library. Her academic achievements in AP English, honors psychology, and AP biology have earned her several scholarships, and she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Fitchburg State University.
Another highlight of the meeting was the approval of the proposed school calendar for the 2026-2027 academic year and updates to the student and athletic handbooks. Jennifer Mashado, director of the Practical Nursing program, presented the updates aimed at supporting student success, while the assistant superintendent principal reviewed changes to policies concerning head injuries and concussions. Both updates were unanimously approved.
This initiative allows students to gain invaluable hands-on experience in their respective fields.
Athletics and extracurricular activities were also celebrated, with the school’s sports teams achieving commendable results. The softball, baseball, and lacrosse teams all qualified for state tournaments. The unified track team and the Griffin girls flag football team also had successful seasons, with the latter aiming for a regional title and a spot in the statewide postseason tournament.
The Skills USA chapter maintained its reputation as a national model of excellence, with 20 students winning medals at a state conference and nine qualifying for the national conference in Atlanta. The committee approved a motion to fund the trip, emphasizing the value of this opportunity for the students’ development.
Cultural and artistic endeavors were not overlooked, with the drama club’s performance of “Checking In” and the music club’s a cappella group contributing to the vibrant school community. The anime club and environmental club provided platforms for students to explore their interests in art and sustainability.
The meeting concluded with the acknowledgment of Anna Deona, a senior representative planning to attend Assumption University. Her contributions to the school were recognized with gratitude, and she expressed excitement for her future endeavors.
The committee also addressed administrative matters, approving salary increases and contract renewals for various personnel. These decisions were made with unanimous support.
