Retiring Oradell Teachers Honored for Decades of Dedication to Education
- Meeting Overview:
The Oradell School Board meeting was marked by tributes to retiring educators who have collectively dedicated over a century to the Oradell Public School District. The meeting celebrated their careers with emotional speeches and personal anecdotes from colleagues, students, and board members.
The standout moment of the meeting was the recognition of Heidi O’Keefe, a teacher who after 40 years of service, announced her retirement effective July 1, 2026. The board honored her with a resolution that detailed her remarkable contributions to the district. Colleagues and students reminisced about her character, describing her as compassionate and strong, and praising her ability to connect with students, particularly those facing difficulties. A former student recalled O’Keefe’s strict yet caring nature, stating she was a teacher who acted out of love. The resolution highlighted her role on the intervention team, where her thoughtful approach and generosity were pivotal in creating a collaborative environment. Colleagues suggested she consider mentoring future educators, noting her experience would be invaluable to aspiring teachers.
Another retiring teacher, Tracy Shawn, was celebrated for her 38 years of service to the district. Known for her transformative impact on students, Shawn was particularly lauded for her role in the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program and as an Odyssey of the Mind coach. Former students and colleagues shared anecdotes that underscored her encouragement of curiosity and creativity. One former student noted that participating in Odyssey was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of their life, crediting Shawn with their newfound confidence. The librarian recalled Shawn’s knack for teaching in any situation and her voracious reading habits. Shawn expressed gratitude for the community she had been a part of for so long and mentioned her desire to stay connected with colleagues and students.
The board also recognized Joan Novak, a retiring nurse aide with eight years of service. Although not present, a resolution was read in her honor, acknowledging her humor and professionalism. Colleagues expressed admiration for her ability to care for students and develop meaningful relationships, with one noting her quick wit and wisdom.
In addition to the retirements, Kristen Tarzano was named the 2025-2026 Teacher of the Year. Known for her genuine connection with students and a positive attitude, Tarzano was celebrated for her outstanding contributions as an educator. Colleagues praised her ability to engage students and her personal touches, such as remembering details about their families and interests. A student shared that Tarzano’s kindness made school a more enjoyable experience, while a colleague noted she is a champion for her students. The recognition culminated with applause and cheers, as well as photos with family members.
The meeting also featured discussions on administrative matters, including a resolution addressing rising public school employee healthcare costs and a report on Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB), both of which were approved unanimously. The curriculum committee provided updates on the science curriculum and student data analysis using the LinkIt assessment tool. A proposal for a tech-free day in June was introduced, with plans for implementation across different grades.
The superintendent discussed the extraordinary aid application process. An update was given on the recent art show, which displayed over a thousand pieces of student artwork, and excitement was shared for an upcoming spring concert featuring fifth and sixth-grade musical groups.
