Bedminster Town Council Urges Rejection of Proposed Water Rate Hikes
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Bedminster Town Council scrutinized several ordinances and voiced strong objections to proposed water and wastewater rate increases by New Jersey American Water. The council highlighted concerns about the financial impact on residents, particularly those in affordable housing and on fixed incomes, emphasizing the need for equitable solutions.
The contentious discussion on utility rates dominated the proceedings, with council members expressing grave concerns over New Jersey American Water’s proposed rate increases, particularly the flat rate sewer service, which could nearly double over two years. A council member criticized the proposed rate hike’s justifications, asserting that it unfairly burdens lower-income households amidst stagnant inflation rates. The council collectively urged the Board of Public Utilities to reject the increases, calling for a fairer rate adjustment process. The member recounted their participation in a public hearing where they formally objected to the rate hikes. The council plans to continue advocating for the community’s interests as the process moves into a discovery phase, with evidentiary hearings and potential settlements anticipated later in the year.
Attention then shifted to several ordinances concerning community improvements and infrastructure upgrades. Ordinance 20260005, which involved a $5,000 allocation for building access control upgrades at municipal facilities, was approved without public opposition. The council also sanctioned Ordinance 20260006, funding $17,500 for HVAC upgrades to the police department and municipal building. Following procedural formalities, the ordinance was unanimously adopted.
A separate ordinance, 20260007, proposed a $12,594 appropriation for equipment purchases for the Pottersville Volunteer Fire Company, covering helmets, turnout gear, and firefighting tools. The township committed to funding 60% of the cost, with Tukberry covering the remainder. This ordinance, too, was adopted without dissent. Similarly, Ordinance 20260008, allocating $39,600 for equipment for the Far Hills Bedminster Fire Department, received unanimous approval. The township will cover 80% of the cost, with Far Hills funding the rest.
Ordinance 20260009, which authorized $15,000 for street lighting upgrades in the Hills neighborhood, was another focus of the council’s infrastructure commitment. The council discussed coordination with local homeowners’ associations to ensure fixture consistency, ultimately approving the ordinance following public input.
The council also addressed significant roadwork initiatives. Ordinance 2026010 earmarked $98,400 for engineering design improvements to River Road, leveraging a Department of Transportation grant of $379,427. The project will address maintenance needs, including turtle tunnels, and the ordinance was approved following the public hearing.
The meeting also introduced Ordinance 202611, which allocated funds for the repaving and reconstruction of Autumn Ridge and Gate House Roads, with a project cost of $555,000 supported by a DOT grant. The council discussed project timelines and contractor changes before the ordinance was unanimously approved.
In addition to ordinances, the council celebrated community achievements. A letter of commendation was read, praising the Bedminster Police Department and first aid team for their quick response to a medical emergency, saving a man’s life.
