The clubs, which meet bi-monthly, organize events like the annual match party and birthday feast to foster community and togetherness. The Best Buddies Friendship Walk was highlighted for raising over $700 and being recognized for its spirit. Club members shared personal experiences. The Unified Sports program, offering activities like track, soccer, and basketball, was praised for its welcoming environment. Kaitlin Rodos from the Unified program shared how these activities build relationships, making her fellow athletes her best friends.

The meeting also celebrated the achievements of the Mount Olive Robotics Team. Celebrating its 30th year, the student-run team achieved success, with the varsity team ranking 10th in the district championship and placing in the top 3% globally at the world championship. The absence of adult coaches was noted as a unique aspect of the program, emphasizing student leadership and initiative.

Retiring staff members were recognized for their long service to the district. A total of 30 retirees with a combined 692 years of service were acknowledged. Notable mentions included Viviana Latellier, praised for her reliability as a transportation driver, Deb Ngi, recognized for her commitment over 26 years, and Laura Rutan, celebrated for her impact as a music teacher. Each retiree present was individually commended for their contributions, with remarks on their lasting impacts and the void they would leave in the community.

The board discussed its decision to seek new bids for auditing services, clarifying that the change was not due to dissatisfaction but because the former board secretary had conducted the audit, keeping costs lower. The Curriculum and Instruction Committee provided updates on the district’s education monitoring review, which maintained tier one status for the 2026-2027 school year. The committee also discussed professional development goals, support for at-risk seniors, and plans for America’s 250th celebration and Juneteenth.

During public comments, Precious Pel raised concerns about the lack of recognition for Juneteenth within the school community. She noted that while other federal and general holidays are celebrated, Juneteenth remains overlooked. Pel argued that Juneteenth is not just a Black holiday but a celebration of freedom and unity for all Americans. She urged the board to consider recognizing Juneteenth in future school years, contrasting its current lack of acknowledgment with other celebrated holidays. Board members acknowledged the importance of recognizing Juneteenth and mentioned that plans were already in place to celebrate it alongside America’s 250th anniversary.

The meeting also addressed logistical concerns, including the ongoing situation with the inflatable dome at the high school, which had been cited for code violations. An appeal has been filed with the Morris County Construction Board of Appeals, with a hearing scheduled for August 27. In the meantime, the dome will be closed from June 1 to July 15 to allow for resolution discussions.
