Passaic County Board Meeting Honors Educator Amidst Rising Gun Permit Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The Passaic County Board of Commissioners meeting was marked by discussions, notably the recognition of Alyssa Betar, a local educator, as Teacher of the Year, and a detailed presentation on the rising number of gun permits in the county. The meeting also addressed traffic safety improvements and the ongoing redevelopment project on Marshall Street.
One of the most notable moments of the meeting was the recognition of Alyssa Betar as the Teacher of the Year for Passaic County for the 2025-2026 academic year. Betar, an engineering and STEM teacher at Manchester Regional High School, was praised for her contributions to education, particularly in developing an innovative engineering program. Since joining the district in 2014, she has implemented a curriculum that includes project-based learning, computer-aided design, and real-world engineering challenges, aimed at preparing students for STEM careers. Her work in mentoring fellow educators and advising student clubs was also highlighted.
Betar’s classroom environment was noted for fostering inclusivity and encouraging leadership among students. In her speech, Betar expressed her gratitude to the Board of County Commissioners and emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment where every student feels capable of pursuing their dreams. She acknowledged the support from her administration, colleagues, and students, who inspire her daily.
The meeting then shifted focus to a presentation by Toby Murphy from the New Jersey chapter of Moms Demand Action. Murphy, an educator and resident of Hawthorne, shared her motivations for joining the movement focused on preventing gun violence. She highlighted a concerning increase in concealed carry permits within the county, which saw numbers rise from 45 to 4,913 over four years. This surge, following a Supreme Court ruling affirming the right to bear arms in public, has raised concerns about public safety.
Murphy introduced the “Be Smart” framework, aimed at promoting gun safety awareness. This initiative encourages secure firearm storage, responsible behavior modeling, and community engagement in discussions about gun safety. The framework seeks to shift the conversation from gun control to safety, promoting awareness of the role firearms play in suicides and other incidents. Murphy’s presentation called for community education, including distributing bilingual pamphlets and hosting presentations to raise awareness.
Following the presentation, a commissioner inquired about data comparing gun violence incidents involving concealed carry permit holders versus unlicensed firearms, underlining the need for comprehensive analysis.
In other developments, the commissioners announced the installation of traffic safety beacons at two pedestrian-heavy areas in Patterson, addressing the risk to pedestrians attending local mosques. This initiative aims to enhance traffic safety in these areas, which have previously been identified as high-risk locations.
The meeting also covered the introduction of a bond ordinance for a redevelopment project on Marshall Street. This marks the financing phase for the second stage of the project, which includes facilities for the Board of Social Services and the Board of Elections. The project aims to consolidate services and improve efficiency, particularly with the increase in mail-in voting.
Additionally, the eighth annual Art in the Park event was announced, inviting community participation in the activities planned for the day. The public portion of the meeting included comments from a representative of the Passaic County Building and Construction Trades Council, who expressed gratitude for the board’s partnership and support for lowering the project labor agreement threshold in the county.
