Fairfield School Board Discusses $1M Furniture Upgrade Amid Celebrations for Retirees and Students
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Fairfield School Board meeting, the board deliberated over a substantial financial decision regarding the refurbishment of student and teacher desks across district schools, with costs projected to exceed one million dollars. This discussion coincided with ceremonies celebrating the district’s retirees and students’ achievements in various competitions.
The most notable topic centered around the finance committee’s exploration of options for upgrading the outdated furniture at both Stevenson and Churchill Schools. The decision to consider multiple bids instead of relying solely on a state contract was emphasized, as the contract was deemed excessively high.
The board noted that some classrooms might not receive new furniture immediately due to a potential future referendum that could impact those spaces. Ensuring that any purchased items would align with future acquisitions was a priority. A special meeting was scheduled before June 30 to further discuss these plans and encourage community input, underlining the board’s dedication to engaging with stakeholders.
Superintendent Ryan Gupta then turned the focus to honoring retirees who have contributed to the district over the years. Among those recognized were Rita Schubach, with 21 years of service, and Bob Woodson, who served for 38 years. The audience applauded these individuals for their dedication, with light-hearted comments highlighting Miss Sue’s popularity among students. Gupta expressed gratitude for their service, wishing them well in their future endeavors.
The meeting then celebrated student achievements, with recognitions for “Students of the Month” from Stevenson School and winners of various competitions. Charles, a fourth-grade student, was acknowledged for winning a certificate in the Essex County poster contest. Additionally, “Bulldogs of the Month” for third-grade students were celebrated, with applause for their accomplishments.
Adjustmentsttention was given to students’ success in various competitions, as highlighted by Dory Nazarian, who oversees the Stevenson Steam and Churchill High Enrichment Program. She praised students Nathaniel, Ella, Robert, and others for their accomplishments, inviting the audience to view a photo display of their projects. Winners of the Essex County steering committee for gifted and talented programs problem-solving tournament were announced, with Vivana H. earning first place.
Nazarian also introduced the New Jersey Consortium for Gifted and Talented Programs Design Challenge, where students designed classrooms or playgrounds. Meline P. received top honors for her playground design among sixth through eighth graders. Another competition, “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” required students to integrate character education with cardboard engineering. Morgan Z. and sixth graders Dennis B. and Aiden B. were among those recognized for their creative projects. Nazarian emphasized the students’ perseverance and the support from their families and the administration.
The meeting transitioned to upcoming events, with an announcement about a “Popsicles on the Playground” playdate for incoming kindergarten families scheduled for June 25. The board also acknowledged the success of a recent bike rodeo organized by the Fairfield Municipal Alliance, which engaged 45 participants.
