Nutley Rent Leveling Board Moves Forward with New Ordinances and Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Nutley Rent Leveling Board, commissioners progressed on several new ordinances, including amendments to parking regulations and substantial municipal capital improvements. The meeting also featured the recognition of community contributions, along with plans for upcoming events.
At the forefront of the meeting was the introduction of ordinance number 3614, which seeks to amend the township’s code concerning vehicles and traffic, specifically focusing on parking restrictions on Grant Avenue. This ordinance aims to alleviate the parking challenges faced by residents due to congestion during ball games when attendees frequently park on the avenue, obstructing residential access. A public hearing was opened for this ordinance, yet no members of the public stepped forward to provide input, leading to a unanimous decision to close the hearing and move forward with the ordinance.
Simultaneously, the board introduced and approved ordinance number 3615, which allocates $150,000 towards necessary upgrades to the water and sewer utility. This bond ordinance was also opened for public discussion, but no comments were made, and it proceeded with unanimous board approval. The board’s focus on infrastructure continued with ordinance number 3616, which involves $2.1 million in bonding for various municipal capital improvements, including infrastructure upgrades, building improvements, and the acquisition of a fire truck. This ordinance is part of an annual capital management plan designed to maintain municipal facilities without negatively impacting debt service. The ordinance passed with unanimous consent following a brief public hearing.
The meeting also addressed several resolutions, including a change order for a contract with Rock Industries, which increased the contract amount by $2,145, bringing the total to $6,645. This adjustment was made for tax lien purposes, and the funds were certified by the chief financial officer before receiving unanimous board approval. The mayor remarked on the successful recent tax sale, highlighting that approximately 99 properties were involved, primarily related to water and sewer charges.
In community-focused initiatives, the board issued a proclamation honoring Prudence Subradi, a Nutley High School educator recognized for her efforts in promoting diversity and inclusivity through her involvement with the Nutley Cultural Inclusion and Diversity Council. Subradi’s leadership in the student organization “Building Bridges” and her role in organizing the Nutley High School Night of Nations event were particularly noted. Subradi expressed her gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the positive environment at Nutley High School.
The board also discussed upcoming community events, including the Nutley Summerfest and a water lantern festival hosted by the Greater Nutley Cancer Foundation. These events aim to foster community spirit and engagement, with positive feedback already received. Additionally, preparations for the Fourth of July celebrations were highlighted, featuring a larger fireworks display in honor of Nutley’s 250th anniversary, with festivities scheduled to begin at 6 PM.
Resolutions recognizing special observances were also passed, including a celebration of Autistic Pride Day on June 18, 2026, and Juneteenth Independence Day on June 19, 2026. Emphasizing the importance of community engagement and awareness, these resolutions received unanimous support. The board also addressed a resolution to approve the township’s Fourth of July festivities and firework display, with the vendor for the fireworks identified.
