Methuen School Committee Delves into Literacy Initiatives and Student Support Systems
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Methuen School Committee meeting focused on a review of the district’s progress in literacy development, student support systems, and mental health services, with a emphasis on educational recovery post-pandemic. Discussions highlighted the introduction of new curricula, the success of early college programs, and the need for updated district accommodation plans.
At the heart of the meeting was the district’s literacy initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Gowski, who presented an overview of the strategy plan’s second year. The plan’s primary objective is to enhance literacy development and language acquisition, with the new English Language Arts curriculum, CKLA by Amplify, taking center stage. Methuen’s participation in the science of reading coach pilot program, which harnesses AI to improve lesson delivery, was acknowledged as a step forward. Feedback from professional development sessions revealed that 93% of teachers feel prepared for the curriculum’s next implementation phase. Dr. Gowski shared MClass growth data, indicating that students in grades one through four exceeded national growth norms, although kindergarten lagged slightly. This data will inform future strategies to address variances in classroom performance.
Discussion also turned to the district’s efforts to close opportunity and achievement gaps. The Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) was reviewed, with a focus on equitable grading and instructional methods. The early college program, offering students the chance to earn college credits while still in high school, was lauded for its success, with 83 students enrolled and 264 credits earned. This initiative provides pathways in teaching, engineering, and law, with personal success stories underscoring its impact. Additionally, accessibility to Advanced Placement (AP) exams for low-income students was assured, with fee support mechanisms in place.
The committee also evaluated mental health resources and chronic absenteeism. A one-page resource was introduced to clarify mental health support services for students and families, addressing the complexities of navigating these services. Absenteeism remains a challenge, with discussions on improving attendance through relationship-building between teachers and students. The updated teacher rubric from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) emphasizes this approach.
Moreover, the meeting addressed concerns about educational recovery for students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognition was given to staff efforts, like those of Miss Tetro, in aiding students’ return to education and their pursuit of GEDs. A proposal was made to approach the legislative delegation for resources related to vocational schools and adult learning, with an emphasis on the need to support students at risk of being left behind.
The committee also engaged in a review of the District Curriculum Accommodation Plan (DECAP), which had not been updated since 2013. The revised DECAP aims to provide clear guidance on accommodations, aligning with Massachusetts General Law. However, concerns were raised about the potential implications of broad accommodations on the identification process for special needs students. Ensuring proper documentation for accommodations that qualify for standardized testing was emphasized as a priority.
