Monroe Zoning Board Approves Security Fence for Sikh Temple Amid Rising Safety Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Monroe Zoning Board meeting, the proposal for a six-foot security fence at the Guru Nanak Sai Heritage Sikh temple was unanimously approved. Other discussions included a subdivision proposal by Appleg LLC to create three lots and various procedural approvals.
The request for a six-foot security fence at the Sikh temple located on Woff Mills Road was presented by attorney Tim Arch on behalf of Guru Nanak Sai Heritage. The temple, situated in an R60 zone, typically allows for a maximum height of three feet for front yard fences. However, the proposed fence, set back 50 feet from the front yard, was designed to comply with setback requirements while providing enhanced security. Arch emphasized the increasing threats faced by religious sites and the necessity of the fence to deter unauthorized access, referencing planning and engineering reports confirming readiness to address potential concerns.
Mr. Sadderinder Singh, a witness for the applicant, testified about previous security incidents, including unauthorized vehicle access during closed hours. He confirmed that the fence initiative is part of a federal grant program aimed at improving security for houses of worship. The proposed fence would feature an electronically controlled sliding gate, operable remotely by the temple priest. Singh assured compliance with standard emergency procedures, including the installation of a NOX box for emergency access. Board members expressed no objections, and the absence of public opposition led to a unanimous decision to approve the application.
The board then shifted focus to a subdivision proposal by Appleg LLC, represented by Jared Pap. The proposal seeks to subdivide two existing lots into three—two for single-family residences and one for commercial development. Pap confirmed meeting jurisdiction sufficiency and detailed the subdivision’s alignment with existing natural features. The proposed lot lines would follow natural boundaries, such as a stream, rather than adhering to strictly perpendicular angles, which the applicant argued enhances zoning through natural contours.
The representative noted that premature enhancements might suffer damage during the site’s development, proposing to complete necessary improvements, including curb, pavement, and sidewalk enhancements, at the appropriate time.
The board confirmed the driveway’s compliance with zoning standards, negating the need for additional waivers. The property’s considerable size, exceeding minimum zone requirements, alleviated concerns about irregular lot shapes necessitating future variances. The absence of public commentary and the board’s acceptance of the one design waiver and no variances facilitated further positive discussion.
The meeting also addressed procedural matters, including the memorialization of previous approvals for applications BA-5240-23, BA-5268-26, and BA-5241-23, each passing unanimously. Public engagement was minimal, but a future executor of a property inquired about rescheduling a hearing for an application related to 232 Old Forge Road. The board advised submitting a formal request to carry the application to a future meeting. Another resident sought clarification on notification processes for the same application, underscoring community interest in zoning developments.
