Rajiv Sethumadhavan highlighted the inadequacy of the stormwater system, pointing out that smaller downstream pipes lead to backups, exacerbating the flooding situation. He urged the council for prompt action, emphasizing that an 18-month wait for improvements was unacceptable.

The Mayor acknowledged the residents’ concerns, noting the area had been identified for further analysis and that the council intended to address the flooding issues without unnecessary delays. This acknowledgment did not entirely satisfy residents who demanded more immediate solutions to prevent further damage and ensure community safety.

In addition to the flooding concerns, the meeting provided an update on the redevelopment plans for the One Westmed Place following the Saks Global merger and their exit from Banksville. The owners of the former Lord & Taylor properties announced intentions to sell, prompting a shift in redevelopment plans. The Mayor emphasized that any new proposals must include public improvements, such as the reimagining of the North Side Plaza and enhancing safety at key intersections.

Public safety was also a point of discussion with the introduction of e-bike regulations set to take effect on July 19th. These new state regulations require riders to be at least 15 years old, register their e-bikes, and wear helmets while following traffic laws. The West Milford Police Department will continue its educational efforts and enforcement to ensure compliance and safety on roads and sidewalks.

Routine administrative matters were handled efficiently, with the council approving financial claims totaling over $1 million and passing resolutions related to local parks improvements and security equipment for the West Orange Police Department. The Finance Policy Committee presented a package of twelve resolutions, including authorizations for refunds and permits, all of which were approved without opposition. The council also moved forward with a general ordinance to amend the town code and a first reading of an ordinance to remove King Street Park’s designation as a historic landmark, both receiving broad support.
