A primary focus was the extensive updates on various construction projects, particularly at Applegate and Ericson. Demolition at Applegate is progressing, with the first of three pods showing advancements. The ceiling grid has been removed, and flooring has been taken up. The timeline for completing this phase is set for the end of November. Efforts are being made to ensure the area is secured by the start of the school year, allowing construction to continue without disturbing school operations.

Ericson is also undergoing critical renovations, involving asbestos abatement and ceiling tile removal. Two pods have been completed, and the abatement is on track to finish by July 31. The building is expected to be available to the school district again in the first week of August. However, an issue has arisen concerning ceiling tiles in areas not initially included in the abatement plan. A change order for approximately $430,000 is anticipated to address these tiles in the media center and stage area, as the current schedule doesn’t allow for these repairs before the school year begins.

The Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) has seen significant demolition work at the front of the building, with electrical systems removed and entrance areas stripped. Despite these changes, the playground will remain unaffected. The goal is to have temporary barriers in place to maintain access to hallways and the main office once school resumes.

Other facility updates include ongoing demolition at Eisenhower, where office walls have been removed and electrical work completed, and demolition projects at Barlo and Kina, with the nurse’s office relocated to accommodate construction. At West Freehold, work is pending approval from the Department of Community Affairs for a planned security vestibule.

A proposal for weekly reports was introduced to ensure board members are kept informed. A referendum website is also nearing completion, intended to be a resource for parents and community members, with plans to launch before the school year starts. This site aims to provide updates on the referendum and construction. Back-to-school nights were proposed as another opportunity to update the school community on ongoing projects.

In addition to construction, the board addressed several policy updates. Key among these were policies related to the use of internet-enabled devices by students. A motion was presented to move forward with the first reading of policy 5516 and regulation 560, both focusing on student internet use. Personnel actions, including retirement notifications, resignations, new employment actions, salary adjustments, and substitute rate establishments for the 2026-2027 school year, were also discussed and approved. The motion passed with unanimous support, save for one abstention on the policy vote.

The curriculum committee provided an update regarding the delayed release of New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) scores, with results expected in December. This delay prompted questions about the relevance of earlier field testing and how it might impact curriculum planning. Despite concerns, it was clarified that the district has sufficient data to continue effective student programming, minimizing any negative impact from the delayed results.

Financial matters were also on the agenda, with a review of year-end financials and approval of over $11 million in bills. Topics included travel expenses, out-of-district transportation contracts, and various grant applications. A board member raised concerns about the low turnout for board member training sessions, particularly in understanding issues such as artificial intelligence in education. Only one-third of the members had registered for training, prompting a call for increased participation in future sessions.

As the meeting concluded, there was a brief mention of an upcoming retreat and arrangements for a related dinner event. Despite the opportunity for public participation, no members of the public chose to address the board during either of the two designated segments. The board then moved into an executive session to discuss personnel matters, an appeal related to harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB), and a construction claim, with a unanimous vote in favor of proceeding with the closed session.
