Bedminster Town Council Approves Key Housing and Infrastructure Projects Amid Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Bedminster Town Council meeting focused on several developments, including the approval of the KRE project, which involves reducing residential units while increasing affordable housing, and discussions on enhancing local business environments. The council also addressed infrastructure improvements, community initiatives, and public safety efforts, with unanimous support for various permits and ordinances.
A primary highlight of the meeting was the council’s approval of the KRE development project, which will adjust the number of residential units from 160 to 140 while boosting affordable housing in alignment with recent legislation. As part of the project, KRE has committed to improving traffic conditions at two key intersections: Burnt Mills Road and Routes 2026 and Washington Valley. Additionally, the project includes constructing two pickleball courts at Pluckman Schoolhouse Park. This initiative was met with optimism, as it addresses both housing needs and community recreational facilities.
In another development, the council tackled improvements in local business conditions. They discussed the challenges faced by business owners due to existing ordinances and bulk standards, which impact signage, parking, and lighting modifications. To better understand and address these barriers, feedback from local business owners was emphasized as crucial. Among the business updates was the announcement of a new women’s boutique, “Monkeys,” opening on Lamington next to “Polished.” This boutique is part of a national brand and is expected to attract interest in the area. Additionally, a new bakery, ice cream, and coffee shop is set to open in the old Union Hook and Ladder firehouse in Far Hills, contributing positively to the vitality of both Bedminster and Far Hills.
The council also introduced a series of ordinances related to the township’s budget and capital improvements, each receiving unanimous approval. These ordinances cover appropriations for building access control upgrades, facility improvements, and equipment for local fire departments. Engineering design improvements for River Road, supported by a grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, were also approved. Furthermore, funding for the repaving and reconstruction of Bottom Ridge and Gate House Roads was secured.
Community initiatives were another focal point, with the council approving permits for several events. A seasonal farmer’s market permit was granted to Flounder Brewing Company LLC, set to run until December 2026. Additionally, permits were approved for the township’s America 250th event on July 4, 2026, and a social fair benefiting the Summit Medical Group Foundation on September 28, 2026. An on-premise 50/50 raffle for the Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation was also authorized. In community recreation, the ongoing success of the community garden initiative was noted, with over 100 plots planted and more registrations on a waitlist. The Bert Mills dog park is anticipated to open on June 1.
The meeting also included updates from the Chief of Police, who highlighted upcoming community policing efforts, including a fifth-grade lead graduation and a drug and alcohol presentation for a local Boy Scout troop. The fire department reported 48 instances for the month, while the first aid squad had 36, with an equipment demonstration and preparations for the Memorial Day parade underway.
The Board of Health and the Community Development Block Grant Committee were also active, with the latter securing nearly $32,000 for automatic doors at the municipal building. Infrastructure updates included the Department of Public Works’ plans for lighting repairs on Water Ridge Street and ongoing road clean-ups.
