Bedminster Township Approves 2026 Budget Amid Rising Health Care Costs and Tax Adjustments
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Bedminster Town Council addressed several significant agenda items, most notably approving the 2026 municipal budget after extensive deliberations and acknowledging the challenges posed by rising health care costs. The approved budget, amounting to $15,921,461.40, includes a 3.24% increase in the tax levy, while a concurrent rise in assessed ratables results in a 2.89% decrease in the tax rate, translating to an approximate $4.89 monthly increase for the average household. The budget emphasizes public safety, funding for police, fire, and first aid services, as well as capital expenses for necessary equipment replacements.
The budget preparation was described as particularly challenging this year due to health care costs exceeding the 2% cap, necessitating additional discussions with department directors and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The budget process, involving five meetings, was commended for its thoroughness and the collaboration involved. The committee assured that the budget aligns with statutory requirements, having undergone a self-examination certified by the CFO.
In addition to budgetary matters, the council advanced a contract for the Crossroads Park project, awarding it to JA Neri Excavating Inc. for an amount not to exceed $546,140. This decision followed a satisfactory legal review. The project, which excludes additional alternates for sidewalks and lighting, is part of ongoing streetscape improvements and is anticipated to align with the town’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
The council also focused on community safety, highlighting increased scam sophistication affecting residents. An example involved a fraudulent email presenting itself as an official town communication. In response, a presentation on preventing scams and deed fraud is scheduled, featuring Detective Smith, who will address these issues to enhance community awareness.
Other community events and developments were also discussed. A successful 75th annual Easter egg hunt was reported with no injuries, and camp registration was progressing well. Furthermore, the town anticipates new infrastructure, such as the dog park at Burnt Mills, to be completed by the end of April, and a July 4th event featuring a pig roast as part of America 250 celebrations.
The Environmental Commission’s meeting was rescheduled due to Passover, and the Board of Health looks to convene soon after a missed session. Meanwhile, a public hearing for the school budget is set for April 30, with anticipated tax increases from the school board indicating a more substantial impact on residents.
