Bellmawr Council Grapples with Festival Safety After Carnival Chaos
- Meeting Overview:
The Bellmawr Borough Council meeting addressed several issues, most notably the fallout from a tumultuous incident at the St. Joel’s Parish Festival. The event, which involved over 400 juveniles and ended in multiple fights and injuries, prompted the council to consider the safety measures required for future public gatherings. In addition to festival security, the council also discussed infrastructure upgrades, community events, and local ordinances.
In the wake of the May 10, 2025, carnival incident, council members and public attendees expressed deep concerns about public safety at community events. The mayor addressed the seriousness of the disturbances, emphasizing that the future of such gatherings would depend on the establishment of a solid safety plan. He praised the police department and first responders for their professionalism during the incident, while Chief Bill Peret provided insights into the ongoing investigation. The chief noted that the police department was working closely with the New Jersey State Police and other agencies to understand if there was any orchestration behind the event.
A resident raised concerns about the potential cancellation of the beloved carnival, arguing that it would be unjust to let the actions of a few disrupt a longstanding community tradition. The resident’s plea highlighted widespread community sentiment to preserve the festival while ensuring it remains safe.
The role of social media, particularly TikTok, was also scrutinized for its potential in facilitating large gatherings without prior awareness by local authorities. Public members provided positive feedback on the police department’s handling of the situation.
The council also deliberated on infrastructure improvements and new resolutions. They approved the installation of lights and a working scoreboard at Gity Fields to enhance community facilities. Additionally, a resolution to place trash cans along Beningo Boulevard was passed, albeit narrowly, after the mayor cast the deciding vote following a tie among council members.
In an effort to boost community engagement, the council discussed the recently concluded “Student Government Day,” where local students toured municipal departments. The mayor and council members commended the students’ behavior and noted the appreciation expressed by the students for the hard work of municipal employees. Councilman Bider highlighted the students’ involvement in memorial activities, such as placing flags at the cemetery, which promoted civic pride and remembrance.
Community beautification was another topic of interest. A resident proposed enhancing the borough’s image with welcoming signage and artistic displays, tying in with plans for Bellmawr’s upcoming 100th anniversary celebrations. The council confirmed that a planning committee had been established for the centennial events and welcomed additional community involvement.
In terms of ordinance matters, the council approved the sale of land on Alcian Drive, acknowledging the efforts of a bidder who had contributed to previous community improvements through property renovations. They also set a minimum bid price for additional properties.
Lastly, a property variance issue related to a sober living facility was brought to attention. A resident expressed frustration over its removal from the agenda and subsequent state review. The council acknowledged the ongoing discussions, highlighting the strain on police resources due to calls related to the facility. The debate focused on ensuring that such facilities operate as intended within residential zones, in line with state law.
