- Meeting Overview:
The Cape May Shade Tree Commission’s recent meeting focused primarily on strategies to address the city’s invasive species problem, specifically the Lantern fly and Tree of Heaven. With a $20,000 state grant, the commission is set to develop educational campaigns and removal strategies, while also discussing the approval of various tree management plans, including the removal of a problematic leaning tree and the development of a sensory garden at Ku’s Park.
The commission’s receipt of the $20,000 grant from the state emerged as a important tool in combating the spread of Lantern flies, which have become a concern due to their attraction to the Tree of Heaven. The commission acknowledged the prevalence of these trees on multiple properties in both Cape May and West Cape May, complicating pest management efforts. A subcommittee was formed to strategize the response, focusing on public education and mapping the locations of Tree of Heaven to inform a comprehensive action plan.
The commission proposed public information campaigns, including distributing flyers and bookmarks, to educate residents on recognizing the tree and understanding the risks associated with Lantern flies. Discussions included preventative measures such as using vinegar or soap solutions.
Financial discussions revealed the commission’s consideration of a 50-50 cost-sharing program between the city and residents for tree removal. This proposal underscores the commission’s intent to encourage active resident participation in tree management efforts.
In addition to the grant-related initiatives, the commission deliberated on the removal of a leaning maple tree on K May Avenue, presented by homeowner Dana Nester. Nester expressed concerns about the tree’s stability and unsightly appearance, noting the need for access to her neighbor’s property for pruning. The commission evaluated the tree’s health, with some members skeptical of its future viability despite its current good health. They ultimately discussed replacement options, including Hackberry and Crimson King trees, while encouraging Nester to review the list of approved species before making a decision.
Attention was also given to the proposal of a sensory garden at Ku’s Park, designed for individuals with special needs. The garden aims to feature tactile trees with soft leaves and elements like Braille for tree identification. However, the feasibility of planting larger trees was questioned due to existing underground drainage pipes. The commission highlighted the need for a robust maintenance plan to ensure the long-term health of the trees, emphasizing community involvement in tree care, particularly during drought conditions. Residents were encouraged to water street trees weekly.
The meeting concluded with discussions about ongoing construction projects, the upcoming publication of an approved trees list on the city’s website, and the need for a systematic approach to track tree trimming and removal approvals. The commission recognized the importance of transparency and efficiency in these processes, acknowledging the challenges posed by unapproved tree removals in residential areas.
