Chelmsford School Committee Discusses Middle School Project and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The Chelmsford School Committee meeting covered updates on the middle school building project, celebrated student and teacher achievements, and discussed various educational programs and initiatives. A status update on the middle school building project highlighted ongoing decisions and interactions with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA).
A crucial agenda item was the status update on the middle school building project. Dr. Jay Lang noted that the building committee had recently convened to discuss project management options, debating between a construction manager at risk and a design-bid-build approach. The committee had previously met with the facilities subcommittee of the MSBA board and planned a follow-up meeting for schematic design approval scheduled for June 24. The next Parker School building committee meeting, along with the final community forum of the year, was set for the following Wednesday at the Chelmsford Senior Center, due to a scheduling conflict at the Elks. Efforts were made to communicate this venue change to the community effectively.
The meeting also celebrated various district-wide achievements. Among these was the Future Teachers Signing Day at Chelmsford High School, where 18 students committed to pursuing education majors in college. This event aligned with the strategic plan’s goal of encouraging students to enter the teaching profession. The discussion acknowledged the significance of honoring these students, with recognition for the increase in participants compared to the prior year.
The committee highlighted achievements within the district, such as the early college designation received by Chelmsford High School. This designation enables students to take college courses free of charge, providing them with valuable academic opportunities. Additionally, the meeting recognized Coach Roous of the women’s lacrosse team for being named Coach of the Year and Katherine Craig’s accolade as NBC Conference Division 1 Player of the Year.
Another focal point was the report on the district’s nutrition program. Nancy Anteneelli presented a year-end review, noting that 696,956 meals were served across breakfast and lunch, with a slight decrease in breakfast participation but an increase in lunch. She explained that breakfast service faced challenges due to distribution methods often taking place in hallways. The program introduced new menu items featuring scratch cooking recipes, and collaboration with Valley Collaborative helped employ additional staff for meal preparation. Plans to enhance kitchen and cafeteria spaces with pop art designs to create a more inviting atmosphere were also discussed.
The meeting featured a presentation on the Hagerty program, utilized in phonics instruction for lower elementary grades. The program emphasizes auditory foundations in reading, providing explicit, systematic, and multi-sensory instruction through daily routines. Two kindergarten teachers demonstrated phonics exercises with students, highlighting the program’s structured, rhythmic nature, which aids in reducing cognitive load and improving focus on sound learning.
Discussions included the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) writing framework, which many teachers have integrated into their classrooms. This framework empowers students in various writing genres, incorporating self-regulation and writing techniques. Teachers shared insights into the program’s structure, including mnemonic strategies like POW (Pick, Organize, Write) and TIDE (Topic, Important information, Details, Ending) graphic organizers.
The meeting also addressed budget-related topics, focusing on a new project for historical budget analysis and benchmarking. This initiative aims to provide insights leading up to the district’s next strategic plan development, documenting budgetary allocations and expenditures over the past decade. The project will involve interviews with the central office team and focus groups with district-level staff and administrators, with a report expected in early September.
Furthermore, the committee discussed recommended one-time budget purchases for athletics, totaling $51,460. This was the final request for one-time purchases, following previous approvals. The committee agreed to proceed with these purchases, acknowledging the availability of funds and the importance of supporting athletics.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous motion to proclaim June 2026 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in the Chelmsford Public Schools. The proclamation emphasized the necessity of providing a safe and supportive environment for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
