Colonia Middle School Fire Disrupts Classes, Prompts Remote Learning and Safety Discussions by Woodbridge School Board.
- Meeting Overview:
A fire in the art room at Colonia Middle School dominated the recent Woodbridge School Board meeting, prompting a significant response from local fire departments and resulting in temporary remote learning. School safety and emergency response efforts were highlighted, with the community expressing gratitude for the rapid and effective containment of the fire. Additional topics included reports on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and a call for enhanced domestic violence education in schools.
The meeting took a decisive turn when Superintendent Joseph Massimino detailed the response to a fire that broke out in Colonia Middle School’s art room at 1:45 a.m. The swift actions of the Colonia Fire Department and neighboring departments were praised for confining the damage to a single classroom. This prompt intervention allowed the school to transition to remote instruction for two days. The school board acknowledged the dedication of the first responders and the Buildings and Grounds department for their efforts in quickly preparing the school for students to return. Superintendent Massimino expressed relief that there were no injuries and announced a calendar adjustment, with Colonia Middle School having a half-day on June 2nd to compensate for the lost day.
The meeting also opened the floor to public comments, where students from John F. Kennedy Memorial High School shared their triumphs in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) program. They celebrated their achievements at the New Jersey state leadership conference, where they garnered 39 gold medals, six silver, and six bronze. Their success highlighted the robust support from faculty and the personal growth afforded by such extracurricular activities, with 12 students qualifying for the national conference in Washington, D.C.
The discussion then shifted to the district’s approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A resident voiced strong opposition to current DEI initiatives, arguing they foster division rather than unity. The speaker critiqued the district’s handling of gender identity issues and referenced a Finnish study to support claims of increased suicidal ideation linked to DEI practices. They also questioned a purported policy allowing boys to use girls’ restrooms and the provision of tampons in boys’ restrooms, urging the board to confirm whether equity remains a core philosophy. The speaker’s remarks included a critique of discussing “whiteness” as a form of oppression, arguing it undermines individual agency.
In response, a board member, Marie Anderson, clarified that the district does not maintain a DEI position and refuted the claims made by the resident. He asserted that abandoning such initiatives would prompt a reevaluation of the district’s purpose. Another board member dismissed claims of “brainwashing” due to the lack of significant parental support for these assertions.
Attention then turned to the issue of domestic violence education. Dwight Glenn, from the Woodbridge Domestic Violence Response Team, addressed the need for better coverage of domestic violence and its indicators in school health classes. He noted that many students were not exposed to discussions on dating violence, potentially leading to more severe consequences like sex trafficking. Walt Pierson, also from the Response Team, highlighted the multifaceted nature of domestic violence, including emotional and psychological abuse, and stressed the importance of educational interventions for middle school students. He proposed partnering with the Stephanie Parze Foundation to provide lessons on healthy relationships at no cost to the district.
