Dennis-Yarmouth School Committee Honors Community Partners and Reviews Superintendent’s Performance
- Meeting Overview:
In a meeting filled with recognition and evaluation, the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee celebrated community partnerships that aid in transitioning students to independence, while also conducting a detailed review of Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith’s performance. Other topics included progress in reducing absenteeism, leadership restructuring, and a legislative breakfast focusing on school funding.
The highlight of the evening was the second annual community partnership award celebration for the Pathways to Independence Transition Program. Melissa O’Reilly, the special education department chair, introduced the program and expressed gratitude to the community members who support students in developing life and vocational skills. The program added four job sites this year and partnered with Cape Cod Community College. The celebration included the presentation of three awards: the Community Collaboration Award, the Community Leadership Award, and the Community Impact Award.
Taylor Brave Farm received the Community Collaboration Award for providing students with life experiences through interactions with farm animals and community members. The Community Leadership Award honored three teachers from the district who have supported Pathways students by creating leadership opportunities in their classrooms. Freestyle Living and the Yarmouth Rotary Club were recognized with the Community Impact Award for offering hospitality skills training and supporting students with field trips.
Principal Kendra Bennett, in a letter read aloud, praised the staff and community partners for their dedication to student success. Kyle Merrill, the new lead teacher, emphasized the importance of meeting students’ individual needs and goals. The awards segment concluded with a video of a student, Dominic Antinucci, discussing the skills he acquired at the Freestyle Living job site.
The meeting then transitioned to the superintendent evaluation, a significant agenda item where Dr. Marc Smith’s performance over the past year was assessed. Dr. Smith received an “exceeded” rating for his professional practice goal and “met” ratings for student learning and district improvement goals. His instructional leadership was rated as “proficient,” while his management and operations were deemed “exemplary.” The evaluation highlighted his success in digitizing outdated processes, improving school safety, and developing a challenging budget.
Acknowledgment was given to the collaborative efforts of all district employees in achieving improvements, with a committee member emphasizing that the successes were not solely attributable to the superintendent. Another member expressed appreciation for the collective contributions of the staff.
In a move to further strengthen district leadership, the committee discussed appointing a new Director of Pupil Services, a position that will allow the assistant superintendent to focus on broader administrative duties. Ms. Laura Nudi was appointed to this role, effective July 1, 2026, based on her extensive experience and successful track record in the district. Ms. Nudi expressed her commitment to ensuring all students have the support they need to succeed.
The meeting also covered the restructuring within the special education department, driven by budget considerations and aimed at optimizing support and management of special education services. The position of assistant director was reduced, and Ms. Nudi’s role was elevated to Director of Pupil Services.
Additionally, the committee discussed the recent reduction in chronic absenteeism, attributing the improvement to a collective effort by principals, assistant principals, social workers, and teachers. Plans are in place to maintain this focus over the summer, emphasizing the connection between student presence and academic achievement.
A collaboration with the Cape and Islands Veteran Outreach Council will bring “The Wall That Heals,” a Vietnam War Memorial replica, to Yarmouth in September, providing students with educational opportunities and volunteer roles. The superintendent noted the significance of this experience for students unable to visit the Washington, D.C. memorial.
The meeting included discussions about the recent school budget override votes in Dennis and Yarmouth. A committee member thanked voters for their support and urged increased voter participation, especially in Yarmouth, where turnout was lower compared to Dennis.
The transition of the director of finance position was addressed, with efforts to ensure a smooth transition for incoming staff and training opportunities for new finance professionals. The superintendent emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in the district’s financial operations.
A legislative breakfast held at the high school provided a platform to discuss budget challenges and featured presentations on school finances. The event facilitated conversations with legislators about funding, special education, and student discipline, with a focus on Chapter 70 funding critical to the district’s financial health.
