Topics ranged from student relationships to comprehensive safety measures. Future plans include incorporating restorative justice training, revising the code of conduct, and enhancing parental awareness regarding HIB-related changes.

Discussion of student conduct, particularly incidents involving racial slurs and substance abuse, revealed an increase in in-school suspensions at Valley View School. This rise was attributed to stricter policy enforcement concerning racial incidents. The presentation clarified that the district experienced fewer predeterminations, meaning fewer cases escalated to formal investigations.

In addressing substance abuse, the report detailed an incident involving a vape containing cannabis. Due to the legality of cannabis in the state, police involvement was deemed unnecessary under the current policy framework. This incident, alongside others, will inform future district goals aimed at reducing HIB incidents and addressing repeat offenders.

The meeting also introduced the new superintendent, who expressed enthusiasm about joining Denville and collaborating with the assistant superintendent, Dr. Miller. Preparations for the upcoming school year were outlined, including scheduling back-to-school nights for the district’s schools in September. The revised district goals for the 2026-2027 school year are set to be presented for approval in the August meeting.

Further discussions among board members focused on the development of board goal action plans and associated timelines. A member proposed a pre-goal setting workshop in June, highlighting the need for a structured and thoughtful approach to goal formulation. The workshop is expected to facilitate more discussions.

The aim is to conduct four workshops annually, split evenly across the year, to support board members’ certification and growth.

Other matters addressed included kindergarten enrollments, with Dr. Miller reporting 192 students enrolled across Lake View and Riverview. The business administrator noted an upcoming audit scheduled for the week of the 27th. Personnel actions such as resignations, retirements, and the approval of the staff list for the 2026-2027 school year were passed unanimously. This included a congratulatory note for a retiring custodian recognized for her long service at Lake View.

The board approved the district’s remote instructional plan for the 2026-2027 school year, along with governance resolutions that focus on enhancing board effectiveness through professional development and stakeholder engagement. Additionally, finance-related motions and shared service agreements for student transportation were approved, facilitating coordination with neighboring districts for sports and field trip transportation.
