Dighton Board of Assessors Recommends Waiving Right of First Refusal on Land Sale
- Meeting Overview:
During its recent meeting, the Dighton Board of Assessors voted to recommend that the Board of Selectmen waive the town’s right of first refusal for a significant land transaction involving 80 acres on William Street. The land, part of a proposed conservation subdivision, is being sold by Tony Almeida.
The Board of Assessors discussed the sale of the 80-acre property, of which 33 acres are currently classified under Chapter 61A, a designation for agricultural and horticultural land. The board reviewed a notice of intent and a purchase and sales agreement, ultimately determining that the town likely lacks the funds to purchase the land. The board voted unanimously to recommend that the Board of Selectmen waive the town’s right of first refusal, which is a statutory right allowing the town to purchase the land at the price offered by a third party.
Additionally, the board approved several motor vehicle abatements for the years 2023 through 2026, totaling $4,271.95. It also approved real estate abatements for 2026 amounting to $1,160.39 and water district abatements totaling $95.58. Another motion was passed to approve the calculation of tax rollbacks related to the William Street property sale, resulting in a total payment of $9,544.84 to the town once the sale is finalized.
