East Windsor School Board Honors Retirees and Faces Public Concerns Over Device Usage
- Meeting Overview:
The East Windsor School Board meeting was marked by recognition of retiring staff members who collectively contributed hundreds of years of service to the school district. The board also addressed public concerns over a new law mandating restrictions on student use of internet-enabled devices during the school day, and a petition was presented urging policy changes to reduce screen time for students.
The assistant superintendent for human resources led the recognition, highlighting the dedication and contributions of 16 retirees, many of whom devoted decades to their roles. Among them was Helen Samino, who served nearly 36 years as the district’s graphic technician. Her work in creating educational materials and ensuring access to balanced meals for students was commended, emphasizing her commitment to the community even as she embarks on retirement.
Jack Wilson, an HVAC technician with over 30 years of service, was praised for his self-taught expertise and problem-solving skills, setting high standards for colleagues. Barbara Beckett was celebrated for her 23 years of nurturing students, particularly her ability to create a welcoming classroom environment. Similarly, Maida Reyes Cotay, a bilingual teacher, was recognized for fostering confidence and supporting diversity and inclusion in her 13 years of service.
The tributes continued with a focus on the impact of these educators. Doris Krellis, a science teacher at Hightstown High School, was commended by the principal for her unique teaching methods, such as the pool velocity lab and fire truck egg drop projects. Her ability to create engaging learning experiences left a lasting impression on students, some of whom pursued careers in science inspired by her teachings.
Wilson Hernandez’s 24-year tenure at Hightstown High School was marked by his dedication to community and inclusivity, as he mentored students and advocated for diversity. Similarly, Maria Zagar, who worked with ESL students since 2001, was acknowledged for her commitment to student success and creating a supportive environment. Denise Stoy’s contributions over 21 years included founding the FCCLA chapter and introducing new programs.
Randy Church’s 25 years at the school were celebrated for her administrative roles and advocacy for school spirit. The event concluded with gratitude from the board and administration, who emphasized the retirees’ enduring impact on students, families, and colleagues.
Public comments introduced the issue of student device usage, a concern for the community. James Avalone, a resident, raised the topic of New Jersey legislation that mandates schools to restrict personal internet-enabled devices during school hours for all grades. Avalone stressed the importance of minimizing screen time, citing research linking excessive device access with behavioral and emotional issues in children. He presented a petition with 113 signatures, urging the district to allow parents to opt-out of technology use in schools to protect children from potential harm.
The board’s response to this petition and the broader concerns about device usage in schools remains to be seen, as it navigates the balance between embracing technology and ensuring student well-being.
Notably, the meeting also included a report from the student representative, who shared updates on recent and upcoming school events, such as the senior prom and awards night, as well as the upcoming graduation ceremony for the class of 2026. The representative also highlighted cultural and club activities.
Superintendent Mark Daniels extended congratulations to the retirees and announced a generous donation of $5,000 from an alumnus to assist families in need. He also reminded attendees of important upcoming events, including promotion ceremonies for fifth and eighth graders, and the final day of school for students and teachers.
The meeting concluded with discussions on routine agenda items, including staffing and the approval of the superintendent’s contract. Concerns were raised about the criteria for determining surplus library books and the potential for community donations.
