Emerson Council Endorses Cancer Screening Bill for Volunteer Firefighters
- Meeting Overview:
The Emerson Borough Council convened on February 18, 2025, to discuss and make decisions on various community-focused initiatives. A notable highlight was the council’s support for Assembly Bill A4649, which aims to provide cancer screenings for volunteer firefighters. Other discussions included honoring local hero Dan O’Brien, addressing flood management updates, and approving an ordinance for the police department.
The council’s endorsement of Assembly Bill A4649 presented a unified stance on enhancing health benefits for volunteer firefighters. The bill proposes to allocate $1,250 over three years for cancer screenings, an initiative paralleling the benefits for paid firefighters. A state senator has sought municipal backing for this legislation, emphasizing its critical role in providing necessary healthcare support. The council agreed to draft a resolution for endorsement, to be featured on the March 4 agenda.
In a moving ceremony, the council honored Dan O’Brien, a longtime resident and business owner, with the 2024 Hometown Hero award. O’Brien’s commendable community service, especially his humanitarian efforts following Hurricane Helen in North Carolina, was recognized. The mayor read a proclamation detailing O’Brien’s contributions, including delivering generators and clearing debris in affected areas. O’Brien expressed humility in his acceptance speech, underscoring his intent to make a difference and highlighting the ongoing need for support in disaster-stricken communities.
Flood management and infrastructure updates were also topics. The council discussed revisions to the flood damage prevention ordinance, with Dave Atkinson from Negle Engineering explaining the state-mandated updates for compliance with new regulations. These updates are important for towns in Bergen County, with a submission deadline set for mid-March and implementation by the end of June. Additionally, the council addressed flooding issues on Jordan and Forest Streets, with discussions on a $10 million grant application for a new culvert. The county suggested alternative, cost-effective solutions, and a geotechnical assessment is planned to better understand the soil conditions.
The meeting transitioned to ordinance discussions, including the second reading and unanimous adoption of ordinance number 1697-1, which amends police department regulations on outside employment and escrow deposits. This ordinance was adopted without public opposition.
In terms of community engagement, the council highlighted several initiatives. Councilwoman Rice encouraged residents to apply for community garden plots, with applications available on the borough’s website. The environmental commission is planning Earth Month activities. Reports also covered the introduction of energy-efficient pumps at the Cindy Lane sewer pump, resulting in significant cost savings.
Notably, the council discussed the status of streaming council meetings, addressing previous technical issues. Vendor consultations are ongoing to improve service delivery. An update was provided on the Rand Pump Station, with construction parts in possession and expected completion by April, contingent on timely material delivery.
The council also announced a commemorative banner program for veterans, available for $200, with banners displayed between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Orders must be placed by April 30. Additionally, the acrian basketball court project was reported as complete, despite a change order to adjust hoop heights, which sparked discussion about the costs incurred due to initial specification errors.
Looking ahead, the council announced the upcoming Ramadan Crescent Moonlighting ceremony on February 26, inviting community participation. Future initiatives include the issuance of commuter parking permits and a “no knock” decal program to deter unwanted solicitation. The council also reminded residents of overdue pet registrations.
Finally, the council authorized the donation of a 1998 American LaFrance fire pumper to a Tennessee fire department, supporting disaster-affected communities.
