Franklin Library Board Approves Budget Increase, Plans Future Capital Projects
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Franklin Township Public Library Board of Trustees meeting, board members approved a substantial budget increase for the fiscal year 2026-2027. The statutory allocation from the township has risen by 13.9%, bringing the total proposed budget to $4,534,924. Additionally, the board decided to move a surplus of $1,352,953 into a protected capital fund.
Discussion clarified that the library itself is not a taxing entity; rather, it receives funding through allocations required by state law. This clarification aimed to address any misconceptions about the library’s financial structure.
In terms of future planning, the capital reserve, now bolstered to approximately $6 million, is expected to cover renovations, including HVAC system upgrades, roof repairs, and interior improvements. The board discussed the importance of maintaining a reserve for unforeseen operational expenses, which is currently within the allowed 20% of the budget.
The meeting also highlighted the library’s diverse programming and community outreach efforts. The adult services department hosted 59 programs with 794 attendees, while youth services attracted 1,414 participants to 50 programs. Outreach included informational tables at local schools and community events, promoting literacy and library resources.
In other discussions, board members expressed concern over ongoing efforts to eliminate federal funding for library and museum programs, emphasizing the importance of these institutions in fostering education and liberal ideals.
