Freehold Regional School Board Reviews Safety Data and Addresses Attendance Policy
- Meeting Overview:
The Freehold Regional School Board meeting focused on student safety data, changes to attendance policies to address chronic absenteeism, and personnel updates, among other topics. Superintendent Dr. Nicole P. Hazel presented key reports and updates to the board, highlighting the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance educational experiences and student welfare.
Dr. Hazel commenced her report by addressing the Student Safety Data System (SSDS), which tracked incidents from September 2025 through December 2025. The report detailed six cases of vandalism, two weapon-related incidents, and six substance abuse cases. Additionally, there were 26 confirmed incidents of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB), alongside 18 alleged cases. The violence incidents included two simple assaults, one sexual assault, seven threats, and ten fights. She stressed the importance of respecting oneself and the community: “This is something we take extremely serious in our schools.” The district’s annual HIB assessment results also featured prominently in the report, revealing a perfect score in areas of policy, prevention programs, and community outreach.
The meeting then shifted focus to the district’s new attendance policy aimed at curbing chronic absenteeism, defined as a student being absent for more than 10% of school days. Dr. Hazel discussed the corrective action plan implemented, which resulted in a five percentage point reduction in absenteeism compared to the previous year. The policy mandates that students maintain 13 or fewer absences by the exam date to qualify for exam exemptions. Dr. Hazel underscored the significance of regular attendance: “Every day counts in school. We need our students here.”
Personnel changes were another focal point of the meeting. The board discussed various appointments, retirements, and resignations, approving all personnel changes unanimously. Mr. Meer acknowledged notable figures in attendance, specifically recognizing Mrs. Levanco and Mr. Cretzmer for their new roles as mathematics and science academic supervisors, respectively. Mr. Cretzmer was commended for his contributions to the district, notably involving a memorable trip related to the Deca competition.
Significant infrastructure improvements were also on the agenda, particularly a $300,000 contract award for wastewater treatment at Colts Neck High School. Discussions included HVAC bids, all of which were approved without contention. A shared services agreement with local police departments and the renewal of the food service contract were also approved under program operations.
Public participation featured a speech by Antonio Lombardo, a recent Marlboro High School graduate, who reflected on his positive experiences during the school year. Lombardo expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded to him, including internships and community events, despite one internship not meeting his expectations. He bade farewell to Dr. Blakeley, whom he noted would be missed, and congratulated an administrator on their promotion to assistant principal at Marlboro High School.
The meeting concluded with discussions on administrative matters, setting board meeting dates extending into early 2028. The board also touched upon the return of student teachers to the district, emphasizing their importance as future educators. As the meeting wrapped up, a member recognized the positive changes under Dr. Blakeley’s administration, sharing personal ties to the district and reaffirming the quality of education during his tenure.
