Allison Denoya’s appointment to the board was a focal point of the meeting. Her selection filled the vacancy left by the resignation of Mr. Asola. Denoya, previously a member of the Colts Neck K-8 School Board, presented her qualifications, emphasizing her dedication to public service and her experience in negotiating contracts with educational associations. She expressed concerns about the challenges facing public education, including federal funding cuts and the potential elimination of the Department of Education. Denoya highlighted the district’s competitive educational standing and its ability to address diverse student needs through various programs.

During her interview, Denoya advocated for a collaborative approach to resolving disagreements and identified school funding and healthcare as significant future concerns. After deliberations in executive session, the board unanimously approved Denoya’s appointment. Her swearing-in was marked by positive remarks from board members who recognized her active community engagement, particularly her participation in the Colts Neck track organization and support for school events.

Following Denoya’s appointment, the meeting shifted focus to infrastructure improvements across the district. The board discussed ongoing and planned renovations at the district’s high schools. Notably, extensive renovations are underway at all five high schools, with a focus on updating science labs. These renovations include demolishing existing structures and installing modern equipment, furnishings, and updated utilities. While Colts Neck High School currently requires no renovations, its long-unused tennis courts are nearing completion. Howell High School and Freehold High School have begun groundwork for similar renovations, with a goal of having the courts ready for the fall season. Additionally, extensive roofing work is being conducted at Howell, Manalapan, and Marlboro High Schools.

Gymnasium renovations at Freehold, Manalapan, and Marlboro High Schools are planned, with upgrades including new floors, bleachers, and full painting. The board also discussed enhancements to the security camera systems and improvements to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, with new rooftop units being installed across all six high schools. Generator upgrades are in progress to ensure operational continuity during power outages, focusing on critical areas such as kitchens and Wi-Fi.

A new “bell-to-bell” cell phone policy, set to be implemented in September, was another significant topic of discussion. This policy will prohibit student use of cell phones throughout the school day to minimize distractions and enhance engagement in learning. Cell phones will be required to be kept in lockers, with strict consequences, including confiscation, for violations. The board’s policy committee will review the policy over the summer to ensure smooth implementation when schools reopen.

Policy updates were also addressed during the meeting. Notably, Policy 0162 was revised to require the publication of school board meeting notices on the district’s official website instead of in newspapers. Additionally, Policy 1643 related to family leave was revised to reduce eligibility time for employees, and Policy 5460 concerning high school graduation requirements was updated to require delivery by certified educators and introduce a mandatory financial aid application for graduating students.

The board also reviewed an energy savings improvement program to evaluate potential cost-saving measures. Various agenda items related to personnel, program operations, and insurance coverages were approved. The meeting included the introduction of Briana Vada as the new administrator of finance, who brings experience from her roles in school district business offices, including her recent position as assistant business administrator at the Bayshore Jointure Commission.
