Galloway School Board Celebrates Student Achievements Amidst HVAC Issues at Arthur Ran Elementary
- Meeting Overview:
The Galloway Township Board of Education meeting on June 8, 2026, was highlighted by the celebration of student achievements in both academics and sports, alongside updates on the ongoing HVAC issues at Arthur Ran Elementary School. The meeting, attended by board members and the community, recognized the successes of students in science, music, and athletics, while also addressing the challenges faced at Arthur Ran due to defective HVAC installations.
Student achievements took center stage, with a focus on the 2026 Jersey Shore Science Fair. The board celebrated the success of 17 students who participated, with several receiving top accolades. Two students achieved first place in their respective categories of behavioral science and zoology, advancing to a more competitive level at the Delaware Valley. Lucas Delisandress received first place in microbiology, while Lucy Bayerman secured third place for her research on bread preservatives. Graham Miller and Declan Stamalos were also honored for their innovative projects. The students’ dedication and hard work were commended by their advisors, Miss Fernandez and Miss Trippin, who shared insights into the students’ preparation and competition experiences.
In addition to academic triumphs, the meeting applauded the artistic talents of students from Arthur Ran School who entered the ShopRight LPGA ticket design contest. Winners received gift certificates and iPads as prizes. The recognition extended to several students selected for the 2026 All South Jersey Elementary Honors Band. The selection process involved nominations and committee evaluations, with students practicing for their performance at an event. The board acknowledged the students’ dedication to honing their musical talents.
Athletic accomplishments were also a focal point, as the Galloway Township Middle School (GTMS) softball team was honored for winning the 2026 Atlantic Cape High League championship. The team remained undefeated throughout the season, with coaches Miss Van Austin Bridge and Mr. Jorgensson praising their dedication and teamwork. The coaches highlighted the eighth graders’ back-to-back championships and commended Coach V for her leadership despite her initial lack of experience in the sport.
The boys’ and girls’ track and field teams from GTMS were celebrated for their achievements in the Atlantic Cape Junior High League championships. The boys’ team had an undefeated season, overcoming the challenge of training without a proper track. Notable mentions included Apollo, who set a school record in the 400 meters, and Eker, who participated in a record-setting relay. The girls’ track team was recognized for their strong competition against perennial champions, with Shayla Moran and Sydney Davis setting school records in discus and the 100 meters, respectively. Angelina Moya also set a school record in long jump and contributed to a record-setting relay. The collective achievements of both teams, setting five records in total, were a source of pride for the coaches and the community.
Attention then turned to the challenges faced by Arthur Ran Elementary School due to faulty HVAC units installed the previous summer. The board reported that all 14 problematic units had been removed by March 30, with ongoing investigations to determine the root cause of the failures. The removal was managed by a vendor organized through a joint insurance fund, prioritizing safety in the process. Hillman Consulting was tasked with evaluating and addressing the damage, necessitating the removal of ceiling tiles due to soot contamination. Approximately 80% of the building had been cleared for safety, but the front hallway, including 15 classrooms, remained under remediation.
The school library suffered a complete loss, with all books discarded due to contamination. Efforts to replace the lost materials involved collaboration with Filelet, the library provider, with an estimated two-month timeline for new orders to arrive. The timeline for students’ return to the building remained uncertain, though optimism was expressed for clearer timelines in the coming weeks. The board appreciated the support from Roland Rogers Elementary School and GTMS, which had accommodated displaced students, and committed to keeping the community informed through social media and school emails.
In personnel matters, Dr. Don Depalo was approved as the new principal of Roland Rogers Elementary School, following a comprehensive selection process. The announcement was met with enthusiasm for his leadership. The board also discussed a new agreement with Stockton University, aimed at enhancing collaboration for student internships and educator development, including a 20% tuition discount for district employees pursuing further education.
