Hammonton School Board Renames ECE Center to Honor Robert Caperryy’s Contributions
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Hammonton School Board meeting, the decision to rename the Early Childhood Education (ECE) center in honor of Robert Caperryy was a significant highlight. This renaming recognizes Caperryy’s extensive contributions to the district. A motion was presented and seconded, leading to a roll call vote that supported the change, with one abstention due to a board member’s position as a trustee of the Robert Caperryy Foundation. The board member stated their full support for the motion despite abstaining for ethical reasons.
In another key topic, the board discussed a proposed modification to the stipend application process affecting numerous positions across the district, including those involved in athletics and extracurricular activities. Concerns were raised about the community’s focus on a single coach and program, despite the policy’s broader impact. A speaker emphasized the importance of transparency and equal opportunity for all employees, urging that discussions be based on facts rather than rumors. The administration clarified that all coaching positions in New Jersey require annual board approval and that the new approach aims to streamline the application process. This procedural change is intended to formalize the selection process and provide a clear framework for future applications.
The superintendent reported on a successful school year, thanking students, parents, faculty, and staff for their efforts. An in-depth evaluation by the New Jersey Quality Assessment Component (NJQAC) had been conducted, and the district initiated components of a five-year strategic plan. The superintendent highlighted the introduction of new adaptive assessments, Cambian NJSLA and NJ GPA, and awaited their results. The ECC pre-kindergarten expansion was ahead of schedule, allowing acceptance for all applicants for the upcoming school year.
There was discussion concerning the board’s communication with the community, with one individual expressing concern over negativity on social media and the importance of addressing misinformation. There was emphasis on the need for factual public discussions and clarification of the board’s hiring procedures to ensure fairness and transparency. Another member addressed recent discussions around the field hockey program and stipend positions, emphasizing that all board members received the same information regarding staffing changes. They acknowledged heated interactions following the previous board meeting and reiterated the need for fact-based public discussions.
The meeting also saw approval of a resolution to defer a payment from the Waterford Board of Education, due in 2026-2027, to June 2028. This deferral was part of a financial agreement that does not alter the Hammonton budget or require tax increases for residents. The resolution was unanimously supported, with the exception of the previously mentioned abstention. A representative from the Waterford Board expressed gratitude for the cooperation shown by the Hammonton Board.
