Hillside School Board Decides Against Layoffs, Celebrates Achievements, and Tackles Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
In the latest Hillside School Board meeting, a key decision to avoid laying off any tenured staff members took center stage. The board also approved an agreement related to a special education matter involving a student with the initials NA, while various recognitions and challenges were discussed, highlighting both achievements and ongoing issues within the district.
The decision to avert layoffs was confirmed and promptly removed from the agenda. The board unanimously approved a related agreement about a special education matter, which was discussed in a closed session and is currently before the Office of Administrative Law.
During the meeting, members swiftly moved through the agenda, approving items across organization, finance, education, and labor sections. Notably, the finance section included 18 items that received unanimous approval, while the labor section saw one abstention.
A highlight of the evening was the congratulations extended to Mr. Emmanaka on his appointment as the principal of Hillside High School. Acknowledged for his journey from student to principal, board members expressed pride in his accomplishments, predicting he would make the community proud.
Dr. Howard spoke about the recent budget discussions, urging the board and community to focus on future efforts rather than past challenges. He emphasized the importance of community engagement with legislators to address what he described as “absolutely horrible” funding issues in New Jersey.
In her superintendent report, Dr. Perez highlighted various district achievements, including recognition of Hillside High School’s valedictorians at the Union County Scholars Award Breakfast and a community gardening initiative that earned accolades.
The report also touched on scholarship awards received by 19 students. Mayor Hyatt’s motivational speech to students was acknowledged as a positive influence on their pursuit of goals.
Dr. Perez addressed ongoing efforts to educate students and families about the dangers of vaping. She also mentioned upcoming educational sessions on human trafficking for middle school students.
Additionally, the board celebrated various teachers recognized during Educators Month. The upcoming track event and the football team’s planned car wash fundraiser were noted as part of the community’s active involvement in supporting school programs.
During public comments, Angel Lawler from the Hillside Education Association emphasized the need for unity in addressing district challenges, defending Dr. Perez against criticisms stemming from previous administrations. The call for collaboration highlighted the importance of collective efforts to overcome budgetary difficulties.
Student representative Sir David Poku advocated for Mr. Boyle, an athletic trainer, praising his long-term commitment to mentoring students. Poku’s comments brought attention to the importance of maintaining staff who have contributed to student growth, prompting the board to consider the alignment of district decisions with its mission.
