Kenilworth School Board Faces Harassment Concerns and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Kenilworth School Board meeting, concerns about handling harassment cases and celebrating student achievements took center stage.
A prominent issue raised during the public comment session involved a parent’s concerns about the school’s handling of her daughter’s harassment case. The parent outlined a timeline beginning in February, detailing how her daughter, a junior, reported harassment incidents that resulted in an extensive report. However, she stated that the situation had escalated before Easter recess, leading her to question the school’s investigation process. Frustrations were aired regarding the principal’s recent replacement and the apparent loss of the original report. The daughter was reportedly asked to rewrite the report, limiting the investigation’s scope to a single incident instead of addressing the full pattern of harassment claimed by the parent.
The parent highlighted that the incidents included inappropriate comments and gestures, which she insisted amounted to sexual harassment. She expressed that the school’s response had been inadequate, sending a message that such issues might not be taken seriously, thereby discouraging students from speaking up. She emphasized the need for a more effective system to deal with harassment, drawing a parallel to workplace scenarios where immediate action would be expected. Despite reaching her speaking limit, her concerns underscored the need for the board to address the handling of such sensitive matters thoroughly.
In a separate discussion, another community member raised safety concerns about the school’s baseball field. The individual questioned the adequacy of a proposed net intended to prevent baseballs from leaving the field and causing potential harm. He highlighted a previous incident where a similar net size was deemed insufficient and urged the board for a timely and effective solution.
The meeting also celebrated student achievements, particularly in performing arts and sports. The session opened with performances by students from David Brearley High School, who delivered an energetic preview of “Cinderella.” Superintendent Jeremy Davies commended the students and emphasized the importance of arts in the district. He also introduced Mr. Bubnowski and Mr. Mills, who shared details about upcoming performances of “The Little Mermaid” and the Harding School spring play, which involved 48 students.
Additionally, student liaison Katie Lima provided updates on various school events, highlighting the strong performance of Brley athletics. The baseball and softball teams had a promising start, and the track and field teams celebrated significant early-season victories. Katie also noted the golf team’s undefeated record and individual accomplishments, such as sophomore Zach Sims holding the lowest score on the team. She further shared information on cultural events, voter registration drives, and academic preparations, including AP testing and a free SAT boot camp.
Superintendent Davies also announced the appointment of Mr. Cukaro as the new principal at David Brearley. In addition, the board discussed a one-time essay scholarship opportunity for seniors, honoring David Brearley’s contributions to the nation, with a $500 award for the winning essay. The application deadline was set for May 15.
The board touched upon upcoming community events, including the Arbor Day ceremony in collaboration with the Kenilworth Amrev 250 committee and various campus improvements like a new boulder climbing park and construction of tennis and pickleball courts, funded by state grants.
The meeting also recognized Marie Lawrence Fabian, the retiring school board attorney, for her 18 years of service. Her contributions were celebrated, noting her thoroughness and insightful questioning that enlightened many discussions over the years.
