Little Falls Town Council Tackles Rising Costs in 2026 Budget Discussion
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Little Falls Town Council meeting primarily focused on the challenges of the upcoming 2026 municipal budget, highlighting increases in essential expenses such as health insurance, solid waste, and pension costs. The meeting also addressed community concerns regarding overnight parking and Airbnb usage, while celebrating local achievements in youth basketball.
One notable issue discussed was the 2026 municipal budget, set for introduction in May and adoption in June. The budget is projected to see a notable increase from the previous year, rising to $27,628,237 from $25,931,260. One major contributor to this increase is the 38% rise in health insurance costs, adding $719,266 to the budget. Other increases include $104,000 for solid waste and recycling, $36,338 for public pension and retirement systems, and $46,000 for utility costs. A statutory library tax increase of $80,534 also contributes to a total budget increase of $1,371,149, aside from a relatively minor increase of $121,199 in other areas.
This revenue boost aims to alleviate the tax burden on local taxpayers. However, the average taxpayer in Little Falls can expect to see their monthly expenses rise by about $96, with the municipal portion accounting for $32 of that increase.
The council also addressed a community concern: overnight parking and Airbnb regulations. Residents voiced their frustrations during the public comment session, with one resident expressing strong opposition to expanding Airbnb usage, particularly during events like the FIFA tournament. Concerns were raised about neighborhood accessibility, citing instances where parked vehicles blocked driveways and posed challenges for emergency services. The resident proposed reconsidering a permitting process for overnight parking to resolve the issue and potentially generate revenue.
Council members acknowledged these concerns, noting past discussions about the administrative challenges of implementing a permit system. The Mayor referenced data on roadway widths. However, illegal parking remains a challenge for emergency access, highlighting the need for enforcement.
In addition to budgetary and community concerns, the meeting celebrated local youth basketball achievements. Four teams from the Little Falls girls recreational basketball program were recognized for their successful seasons. The fifth and sixth-grade team, the Shooting Stars, finished undefeated and won a championship against Woodland Park. Another team, the eighth-grade girls travel team known as the Hornets, achieved an impressive 15-1 record, winning the NWBP 8th Grade Continental C Championship. The Mayor praised the teams for their teamwork and consistency.
The meeting also touched on various community events and initiatives. The library announced activities such as a chess club, while Arbor Day and Earth Day celebrations were scheduled with tree planting and shredding events. The farmers market is set to open at the Little Falls train station with over 25 vendors, and upcoming parades and concerts were detailed as well.
Updates on municipal projects were also provided, including the paving of a municipal lot on Stevens Avenue for new EV chargers, set to begin on April 18th. The meeting concluded with the unanimous adoption of resolutions and ordinances, including a resolution designating Rose Street as a non-condemnation area in need of redevelopment, contingent on a levy wall construction by the Army Corps of Engineers. A change order related to Main Street streetscape improvements was also approved, accounting for additional sign installations.
