Little Ferry School Board Honors Educators and Celebrates Community Milestones
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Little Ferry School Board meeting was marked by the celebration of achievements within the school community, including the recognition of Teachers of the Year, Students of the Month, and milestone awards for long-serving staff members. Updates on ongoing construction at Liberty Middle School and acknowledgments of student activities also highlighted the meeting’s agenda.
The meeting commenced with a tribute to two educators, Mrs. Augusta and Miss Kristen Okino, who were honored as Teachers of the Year for their respective schools. Mrs. Augusta expressed gratitude for her career and the support she has received, reflecting on her journey from a shy individual to a confident educator. She emphasized the significance of building relationships with students and the collaborative environment at her school. Mrs. Augusta’s speech was filled with appreciation for her family, colleagues, and students, stating, “Your trust, partnership, and enthusiasm are what motivate me to continue growing as an educator.”
The principal of Memorial Middle School introduced Miss Kristen Okino, the 2025-2026 Teacher of the Year. In her acceptance speech, Miss Okino acknowledged the impact of her students on her life and career, emphasizing the importance of making connections. She remarked, “This job is just not about lesson plans, tests, or grading. It’s about making connections with your kids.” Her speech underscored the camaraderie among the teaching staff, expressing that working alongside her colleagues felt like being part of a team, a family.
The board meeting also recognized the Students of the Month for April, with students from various grades receiving accolades for their leadership, positive attitudes, and engagement in class. The acknowledgment of these students was a significant highlight.
Isabella Prris from Grey Fox was commended for her initiative and leadership in grade five, while Bella Red, the sixth-grade recipient, was noted for her positive attitude and willingness to assist others.
In addition to individual recognitions, the board celebrated the achievements of the school community at large. Mr. Dunn was noted for receiving a “hole-in-one” award for a flawless budget submission, a rare accomplishment. Miss Bat Cat received an award for her contributions to environmental education, with a ceremony scheduled for later in the month.
The meeting honored five individuals for their 25 years of service to the school community, including four teachers and a custodian. The board president highlighted the significance of their long-term commitment, stating, “25 years is more than a number. It represents decades of early mornings, long days, school events, countless students, and commitment.” The contributions of the custodian were acknowledged for providing a safe and comfortable environment for learning, despite their absence from the ceremony.
The board’s recognition of these individuals underscored the importance of community within the school system, emphasizing the collaborative effort between teachers, administrative staff, and families in creating a nurturing educational environment.
The meeting’s agenda also included updates on the ongoing construction at Liberty Middle School. A representative shared that the project had reached the 50% completion mark, with progress made since the winter months. Attendees were encouraged to stay informed about the project through newsletters and updates, expressing excitement about the advancements.
In addition to the formal recognitions and updates, student representative Kylie highlighted various school activities, including the softball team’s undefeated status and the baseball team’s success. She expressed gratitude towards the coaches and emphasized upcoming eighth-grade events, including a trip to the mall and a school volleyball tournament aimed at raising funds for local families affected by an unspecified incident.
