Lyndhurst School Board Celebrates Student Achievements Amid Infrastructure Renovations
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Lyndhurst School Board meeting focused on recognizing student achievements, discussing ongoing infrastructure projects, and celebrating community contributions, with particular emphasis on the advancements in the high school’s facilities and the academic and extracurricular accomplishments of its students.
One of the central topics of the meeting was the extensive capital projects underway at Lyndhurst High School. The School Board highlighted current renovations, including major overhauls to the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms. These facilities have been completely gutted for necessary upgrades. Additionally, the high school fieldhouse is receiving significant improvements, including the installation of new weight equipment and an epoxy floor designed to enhance both aesthetics and functionality. A critical focus was the replacement of the high school’s boilers, a project costing over $2 million. The boilers had not been replaced for many years, and the undertaking is essential to meet state deadlines for operational functionality by October 15th. The board emphasized the importance of these updates, noting their role in maintaining the district’s infrastructure.
Further renovations were discussed for other schools within the district. Roosevelt School will see the removal of an existing chain-link fence and the installation of a retaining wall aimed at enhancing the school’s appearance. Jefferson School is set to receive gym renovations, including repainting and new wall pads, which will improve a facility heavily utilized by the community. Updates to furniture in the schools are ongoing, with kindergarten and second-grade facilities already benefiting from new desks and chairs, and first-grade furniture to be replaced over the summer. The board expressed a desire to ensure all K-2 facilities are furnished with new furniture in the coming years, acknowledging that some existing items may have been in use for decades.
The meeting also served as a platform for acknowledging student achievements, particularly those involved in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program. The board and advisors praised students for their dedication and success in various competitions. Recognition was given to individual students like Nicholas Brennan, commended for his first-place finish in public speaking, and Giana Lambo, who was acknowledged for breaking the school record in softball with 118 hits. The board and advisors expressed pride in the students’ efforts and underscored the role of faculty and family support in fostering a successful educational environment.
In addition to these achievements, the board recognized the contributions of Maria Rojas, who led the Seal of Biliteracy program and is set to retire. The board also celebrated the achievements of the high school’s performing arts programs, including the LH Corral and LHS Jazz Band, who recently participated in performances for local associations and events.
The board meeting further touched on the installation of a new sound system in the middle school auditorium. This upgrade aims to improve the quality of future meetings and performances.
In formal business proceedings, the board addressed finance, education, curriculum, and personnel matters. All resolutions presented during the meeting received unanimous support from the members present. The meeting concluded with a congratulatory announcement for board vice president Michael Valvano on the birth of his son, followed by a motion to adjourn, which was met with unanimous agreement.
