Superintendent Vincent Caputo presented the district goals for the year, emphasizing the theme “Every Moment Matters.” This theme highlighted the district’s focus on inclusivity, collaboration, communication, and social-emotional learning. Dr. Caputo detailed five specific goals under this theme, including classroom and community engagement, “building forward together” amid ongoing construction, utilizing New Jersey sky data for academic assessment, enhancing information literacy, and promoting personal development through the “best me” initiative. He shared that achieving a score of five is challenging, with a score of four representing successful implementation with some evidence of impact. The presentation included a summary of the goals’ performance, with the first goal receiving a mean score of 3.75. Dr. Caputo mentioned efforts to gather feedback from parents, students, and teachers through surveys to inform future goals.

The meeting also highlighted various initiatives across the district aimed at addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainability. A notable collaboration involved math honor students and kindergarteners participating in a spring food drive, culminating in the Matuchin disco soup event. This initiative included a “share table” designed to demonstrate food equity and reduce waste. Additionally, a sustainability project involved the planting of 70 trees on the high school campus, overseen by landscape engineer Will Salter, with students engaging in this community project and creating educational scavenger hunts about the new trees.

Educational improvements were also discussed, with the district reporting a mean score of 3.7 for the goal of “building forward together.” This goal included revisions to conference schedules and adopting a new individualized math program, especially as the district transitions to full-day kindergarten. The high school introduced flexible spaces. The “sky’s the limit” goal achieved the highest mean score of 4.13, reflecting efforts to improve the educational experience based on survey data.

The integration of AI in education was another focus, with staff at Edgar receiving training on prompt engineering to prepare students for responsible AI usage. This initiative included a successful voter drive to involve 17-year-olds in the primaries, aligning with the goal of information literacy, which had a mean score of 3.83. Activities at various schools emphasized critical thinking and data analysis in the curriculum.

The “best me” goal, focusing on social-emotional learning and engagement, reported a mean score of 3.92. Initiatives such as SEAL story time at Moss and the designation of Edgar as a “no place for hate” school aimed to foster positive values and improve student behavior.

The meeting also addressed ongoing construction projects with specific attention to punch list items at Campbell, Edgar, and Moss. The administration is arranging a meeting with Epic, the construction company responsible for the projects, to establish final timelines. Discussions included the status of the courtyard area and drainage work at Moss, with specific dates being sought for these tasks. Additionally, the board emphasized that inquiries about the state-managed bridge over Grove Avenue should not be directed to them, as it is not part of the school construction project.

Personnel matters were addressed with updates on hiring a new football coach and assistant coaches, highlighting the administration’s efficiency in these processes. Finance items related to contract negotiations were introduced, with positive experiences and common ground established between the board and various employee units, including the MEA, paraprofessionals, secretaries, custodians, and principals.
