Norton Select Board Reschedules Town Meeting and Election
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Norton Select Board meeting, decisions regarding the town meeting and special election were made, with the board voting to continue the town meeting to May 28th, 2024, and to cancel the previously scheduled June 8th special election. Additionally, the board addressed various matters such as grant awards, a school committee vacancy, and infrastructure projects.
The board’s deliberation over the scheduling of the town meeting was a part of the meeting. The initial suggestion was to hold it on the following Saturday to avoid interruptions, but after considering logistics such as the availability of the school, the necessity for chairs and audio-visual equipment, and the provision of a child care room, the board settled on continuing the meeting on the following Tuesday. The capacity of the school was discussed, including the use of the auditorium if the meeting required a second day.
Another matter of importance was the debate around the date for the town election. The board initially considered June 8th for the special election but decided to cancel it and postpone setting a new date until after the town meeting. This decision emerged from concerns about potential confusion if the results of the election did not align with decisions made at the town meeting, and the necessity of having the base budget in place by July 1st.
The town manager provided updates on grant awards, informing the board of a $27,000 grant from the Community Health Systems Foundation to fund emergency transportation and a $20,000 grant from the Mass Housing Partnership for planning related to the MBTA communities law. The board also received an update on the 123 North and Sou Wester Street intersection project, now in its 75% submittal phase to the state, with a scheduled inclusion in the 2026 transportation improvement plan.
The vacancy on the school committee was another topic of discussion following the resignation of a member. Two letters of interest from individuals wishing to fill the position had been received, and the board planned a joint meeting with the school committee to consider these candidates.
The board took the opportunity to declare the observance of National Police Week and Emergency Medical Services Week, recognizing the contributions of public safety personnel. In addition, the board approved the written warrant and discussed the return of the Director of Planning and Economic Development, who expressed eagerness to support local businesses through grant opportunities.
In other business, the board approved the reappointment of a member to the MFM Regional Water District and a motion to reappoint a member to the Sur Commission. A one-day beer and wine license was granted for an event at Watson Pine Arts Chase dining hall, and an acknowledgment was made for a mulch donation to landscape the police department. The Norton police honor guard was commended for receiving a first place award.
