Retiring Educators Honored and Student Achievements Celebrated at West Essex School Board Meeting

Miss Jenny Tom, with 20 years at West Essex, was celebrated for her background in engineering and her ability to integrate real-world experiences into classroom learning to promote critical thinking. Despite her absence, Tom expressed gratitude to the maintenance department for their support and shared her retirement plans of travel and finding a beach house in New England, reminding her colleagues to prioritize self-care.
Miss Ada Trinidad, a Spanish teacher who returned to West Essex after a brief stint elsewhere, was commended for her passion for teaching and cultural engagement. Trinidad expressed her intent to travel to the Dominican Republic and Europe, focusing on family and adventure.
The meeting also honored Miss Bonnie Jen for her 17 years of impactful teaching at the middle school, where she was praised for her innovative methods in fostering critical thinking. Additionally, members of the Department of Special Services, including Diane Lavine, were lauded for their 22 years of service, important to the department’s success.
In parallel to the retirements, the meeting spotlighted student achievements across various domains. The “We Care” program at West Essex Middle School was a focal point, emphasizing holistic education and core values such as collaboration, awareness, resilience, and empathy. Students recognized as “We Care” students of the month included Hugo Braven, Julian Bur, Autumn Leesh, Jace Callie, Jude Ki, and Anora Delapena.
The “Shoprite Stars” award program celebrated high school students excelling in academics, athletics, arts, leadership, and community service. Honorees included Elelliana Gates and Zachary Chow for academics, Brooke Belzano and Justin Fdella for athletics, Miles Schmidt and Maddx Vano for the arts, Samantha Vaness and Jasmine Cordderero for leadership, and Kayla Felix and Ellie Hollandstat for service.
National Merit Scholarship Commended Scholars were acknowledged, with Justin Kim and Talia Machin receiving recognition for their high PSAT scores. The AP Capstone program spotlighted students like Sedarth Suknan, who earned an AP Capstone diploma, and Olivia Martin, who received a certificate for her research accomplishments.
Athletic achievements were not overlooked, with the wrestling team’s successful season and the esports team’s state championship victories in Overcooked and Mario Kart being celebrated. Tim Walsh, the athletic director, praised the wrestling team’s record and individual accolades, including junior Reed Clausy’s fourth-place finish in the state championship.
The meeting also highlighted the success of the music department at the Darnney Park festival, where the band earned first place, the orchestra third, and the choir received the grand sweepstakes award. The National Junior Honor Society’s recent induction of 108 eighth-grade students was an event, emphasizing the importance of academic excellence.
In new initiatives, Miss Kfax introduced a science department program engaging students in outdoor science activities, with three students accepted into the competitive New Jersey Department of Sedge Island field experience program.
The board meeting concluded with reports on recent events and upcoming activities, including the high school’s Night of the Arts and senior awards show, which awarded over $145,000 in scholarships to students. Graduation logistics were discussed, with a series of events planned to culminate in the ceremony on June 18th. Recognition was also given to Mr. Jeff Martin for his service as an assistant principal and to student board members for their contributions.
