Revere Disabilities Commission Prepares for All Abilities Day Amid Safety Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The Revere Disabilities Commission meeting focused on preparations for the 30th annual All Abilities Day at Revere Beach, scheduled for August 15th, alongside addressing safety issues at Revere Beach crossings. Discussions included vendor participation, emergency service coordination, and ongoing safety concerns at Revere Beach crossings.
The primary focus of the meeting was the upcoming All Abilities Day, an event designed to foster inclusivity with family-friendly activities. Scheduled for August 15th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Revere Beach, the event aims to provide a fun and accessible beach day for all participants. The Commission is working closely with local services to ensure the event’s success, coordinating efforts with the Revere Fire and Police Departments to have emergency personnel available on-site. This support was acknowledged as crucial, emphasizing the importance of safety and emergency preparedness.
Event promotion was another key topic, with the Commission discussing the distribution of a new flyer designed by Save the Harbor. The flyer, which includes a QR code for online registration via Eventbrite, will be circulated through local newspapers and social media to maximize outreach. In a bid to attract attendees, the first 100 registered participants will receive a complimentary lunch. The intention is to keep the event non-commercial, focusing solely on informational resources, with no vendors selling goods. The Commission expressed gratitude for the support from Save the Harbor and Representative Jeanino’s office, which has been instrumental in outreach efforts.
In addition to event logistics, the Commission discussed the participation of various local agencies and organizations. Confirmed participants include the Revere Police Department, which will bring comfort dogs to the event. Although the Revere Fire Department had not yet confirmed their participation, efforts to engage them continue. There is also ongoing dialogue with Cataldo, and outreach to additional agencies is being encouraged. Members of the Commission are urged to leverage their networks to invite more organizations to set up informational booths at the event. The involvement of the Commission for the Blind was also considered, with a member noting past services received from them, though contact details were still being sought.
Another agenda item was the ongoing safety concerns at Revere Beach crossings. The Commission acknowledged a series of “near misses” reported by individuals with disabilities, highlighting a pressing need for improved safety measures. Although updates from Julie Damore, who is working on the issue, were not available, the Commission plans to escalate the matter to higher authorities. Efforts to involve Jessica Janino for additional input are also underway. The safety of individuals navigating the beach crossings remains a critical focus, and the Commission is committed to seeking resolutions.
In other updates, the Commission discussed the vendor participation for the All Abilities Day, noting that Lauren from the Swampscott Commission on Disabilities is promoting the event. Additionally, promotional efforts for the All Abilities Beach Day will include the placement of advertisements in local newspapers and extensive social media outreach. Discussions also covered logistical arrangements, such as the need for additional tables and chairs for various vendors at the event.
The meeting also touched upon a grant application from Save the Harbor Save the Bay concerning a DCI permit, with optimism expressed regarding its approval. The Commission shared information about the DCI’s Universal Access Program.
A brief update was shared by a member regarding personal mobility issues, noting they had received a loaner chair while their original chair was being repaired. The member also expressed concerns over potential cuts to Medicare and Medicaid and advised attendees to be cautious about the increasingly strict federal programs.
